Energy tariffs ditched since Brexit vote

Opposition day debate

Twelve energy providers have pulled fixed-rate tariffs and replaced them with more expensive deals since 23 June, according to comparison website uSwitch.

The website found a dozen dual-fuel deals had been replaced since the referendum with new offers costing up to £105 a year more for the average customer.

It said wholesale energy costs had been rising for the past three months, and that the UK’s position as a net importer of energy meant a falling pound was pushing up prices.

British Gas, EDF and Scottish Power are among the firms to have repriced a fixed-rate gas and energy deal.

So it begins - a falling pound, rising energy prices and I expect we will see increases in prices in time for the winter as usual, but this year, because of the weakened pound, any such increases will likely be higher than of late.

Does not bode well for the RPI either.

I read somewhere that the BREXIT vote was a secretly engineered exercise to devalue the pound by stealth. I wonder if this is true?

This is just one of many instances that will cost us all dear after voting for Brexit - surely one of the maddest things the people of this country have ever done!

Here's an interesting take on the Brexit stupidity, from the FT:

LOL - I take it you first two + GB were on the losing side then:rotfl:

But it was your own fault. If you didn't vote in that clown who has the removal lorry booked for tomorrow evening, but instead elected David Miliband, then you wouldn't have to worry about the possibility of any energy price rises at this time.

Moreover, there almost certainly wouldn't have been a referendum the outcome of which you are not happy with.
There would only have been a referendum if there continued to be transfer of yet more powers from Britain to the EU.

So you've reduced consumption? Or overestimated your consumption in the first place?

Eitherway, that could result in you not being on the best tariff for your own actual circumstances. Oh dear...

Sounds like you fixed before the result was known.

Are you not worried what you'll have to pay come May 2017?

Unfortunately I have to agree with you. I did vote Conservative, and I'm now regretting it.

yeah there is still a lot of sour grapes by the losers who lets be honest had everything lined up against us, most of the MPs, a US President, a Bank of England boss and a Chancellor who vowed to punish us and the BBC who advertised all the bad things about leaving Brussels on the main 6 o clock news for 3 days in the last 6 days leading up to the vote. .London of course is still bitter and twisted about it and so are a lot of the young who for some reason never had the bravery,(they could`nt get out of bed ) to cut the ties with Brussels.
Never mind, with all this against us, up here in the North we voted massively in favour of getting out of a lousy deal.My town Doncaster, I m proud to say went 69% OUT !! lol.Serves them right for dumping all the foreigners up here in cheap housing areas instead of the prosperous South East.
By the way, the Pound Sterling was really jacked up in the two months before the vote to an artificial high level so the Money dealers could make their fortunes. When they saw the result of Sunderland they started dealing and the pound dropped like a stone.
Glad to hear that Theresa May is sticking to the democratic vote and getting us out of this rubbish trading club and its failing currency.
