I just got an email saying that they cancelled my policy without my knowledge or permission...

It's due for renewal on 15th July (which is when the policy in question was supposed to begin) and now I wont be insured despite paying the £81.84 in full on my debit card, and they have kept the money and not returned it. I plan to have a right royal go at them in the morning.

Is anyone able to give me some pointers on how I should approach this matter?

To be clear, that email they sent me saying my policy was cancelled was accompanied with no reason, or explanation. Just "Please be aware that your insurance has been cancelled".

What is going on!

Ask them why they cancelled it? Have they kept the money or refunded it already?

    Get insurance elsewhere :)

  • Here is my point, I got my insurance with them because of the fact that they were so cheap. I have limits on what I can spend on insurance and this one fell far below what I paid last year.

No they have not refunded me.

Is it possible that you have had an accident which you failed to disclose to them. This includes accidents in cars as well as on bikes. If they have found a previous accident on the shared database which you had not told them about they would cancel the policy. It could even be an accident for a family member at your address they incorrectly assumed was you.

Hastings are known for being cheap - they are also known for very poor customer service. They do not have a great reputation amongst motorcyclists. This is what you risk if you select your policy based only on the amount that you are paying.

We cannot answer your questions. Only Hastings can tell you why they cancelled your policy. And, in certain cases, they do not need your permission to do so. Speak to them and report back for further advice if needed.

Also be aware ... unless you get this sorted with Hastings, you may now have to answer YES to the question "Have you ever had insurance refused or cancelled".

Did they send you in writing notice that they were going to cancel the policy? They are required to do so before they cancel the policy. Simply emailing you to tell you that a policy is cancelled is not valid.

I suggest that you immediately make a complaint to Hastings Direct to get this sorted.

My understanding of the law, and somebody will probably correct me if I'm wrong, is that if they have not given you prior warning of cancellation in writing, then the policy has not been cancelled, whatever the email says.

Most importantly, if you can get them to admit that they failed to follow the cancellation process, then you can cancel the policy when it expires, and at that point you haven't had a policy cancelled by the insurer. This will make a big difference when you try to get new insurance.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
