Monarch are the 'odd ones out' - you can't print your own boarding pass unless you book a seat. Ryanair, Easyjet, and Jet2 (and possibly others) charge for issuing passes at check-in desks.

I wonder how on earth she got on the outbound Monarch flight with no actual boarding pass ???
All the many flights I have taken over the last few years you have to show your boarding pass at least twice.........

Obviously she got her boarding pass for the outbound flight at the airport.

The Travel Republic website says that for a number of airlines you just turn up at the check in desk with your holiday documents and your boarding passes are provided at that time. Exceptions are Ryanair and Easyjet where you have to go online to the airline website in advance and go through the check in process, at which point you either print off your boarding passes or download onto their app and use your phone at check-in.

They did not do this hence the problem they encountered.

As a matter of interest, if she did not have a debit/credit card with her then how could she have paid over the phone?

That's what mummies and daddies are for ;)

  • To be a pedant, this wasn't a package holiday. Its was 2 separate bookings for flights and accommodation.

The information about online check in is shown as part of the booking process. When there's a section entitled 'Important Information' it's usually a good idea to read it ;)

"Online check-in is mandatory for this carrier, failure to check-in online before arriving at the airport will result in additional charges to issue a boarding pass".

On the payment page there is

"By clicking on 'Book Now' you are agreeing to the agency terms of business of Travel Republic Limited and the booking conditions of the travel providers."

The booking conditions is a hyperlink and both Monarch and Ryanairs full T&Cs are there, so the info is part of the booking process in at least 2 places.
but I think to leave anybody in a foreign country with absolutely no means to get back is beyond the pale

What is beyond the pale is having next to no money left in case of emergencies. €50 would not go very far! The duty of care belongs to your daughter. It's her duty to look after herself. If she had a card couldn't she have got cash out of an ATM? Most airports have them.
