I know plenty of rural areas with 30mph speed limits, no street lighting and repeater signs often obstructed by vegetation.
How do you know its a 30mph limit then?

Being local, I know those roads well, it doesn't take a genius to work that one out.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

Local or not, something must have informed you what the speed limit on these roads was.

Is there a map to check where there are speed cameras at the road I am passing by near my area?
Although it's designed for submitting speed camera sightings to be added in to their database, you can also check for known speed camera locations (mobile as well as fixed) on the PocketGPSWorld site at:

The problem is that on some roads the limit changes so often in quite short distances, I remember a few years back, driving on a road somewhere near Huddersfield, the speed limit seemed to change from 30 to 40, back to 30 again on a regular basis and some of the signs were not easy to see due to heavy vegetation and of coarse, there were quite a few speed cameras, I'm convinced that on that particular road it was all done as a cash cow.
The highway authority which decides the limits and puts up and maintains the signs doesn't get any of the fines.

Depends if people know what the speed limits are then this is easy to do.

If you don't know the speed limit of the particuar road you are on you won't know what speed will activate the speed camera

The aim is to make people observe speed limits and drive responsible.

Probably the fact that the vegetation isn't there in the winter.

I'm going back 15 years and at the time there was a lot of controversy over that particular counties speed camera policies.

I'm aware of how to tell what a speed limit is for roads but there's folk out who don't know and make it up to suit themselves.
