At this time of year, I try to up the stocks anyway - between the fatigue, the likelihood of a common or garden lurgy, and a local "epidemic" of flu ... I want to be able to stay out of the shops as much as possible. And that includes buying things that I need, but don't take up a lot of space, like interdens brushes and shoelaces :)

Jojo - Our DD is a nurse and has to leave the house early, and can't face eating then, so she has one of those ready-made milkshakes. She knows it's not the ideal breakfast but she figures that at least it raises her blood sugar a bit, and contains milk!

Could you bear to nibble a couple of plain biscuits?

Toilet rolls - yes, must get some more to put away. They don't last long in our house, as DS uses them as tissues iyswim.

Sadly, dairy is out of the options and I detest biscuits (and all sweet stuff in general). Hence the copious quantities of coffee, black and bitter as my cold, dead heart :D.

I have tried non dairy milkshakes, but they are equally foul - and expensive. I know I'm going to have to come up with something (and I do appreciate the suggestions) - so some ready to drink vegan ones might have to be ordered and delivered to work.

  • Sorry about that. Currently attempting to dissuade him from 'teaching' himself the tin whistle by

    Shame! :D

The tin whistle is a great instrument if played well. Many years ago I had a few lessons from the 7 times Irish junior champion of whistle and uillean pipes when she studied at a UK university. I'm probably only slightly less painful to hear though!

I'm far better on the bones and can also play the spoons, so those electricty free nights cooking beans with the tealights we can at least have a session as entertainment.!
  • IF being the operative word.

I find matches these days have so little topping they are hard to light. So I got a batch of lighters from the pound shop and I light the match from those (can’t light a firefighter in a grate with a lighter)

Also stocking up on fire lighters when I see them at a good price. I can light a fire with newspaper and kindling butfirelighters make it easier. Prices seem to vary a lot.my local Lidl doesn’t have them any more

I still have a fair amount of dishwasher salt from when I last stocked up for a bad winter. We had building work done, everything got moved around and I lost things for ages

Reading back it looks like most of my stocks are for bad weather. I still think any Brexit disruption is likely to get sorted sooner rather than later if only because French farmers won’t be happy if they can’t get their products to market. But only after Macron has strutted around for a bit and had a good old gloat at our difficulties
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

If only the people here would take power into their hands and get things done like the French do instead of leaving it to the clowns we fondly call our govt
Does anybody know if you can still get those long battery-powered gas lighters that were used to light the gas or the fire? I haven't a clue what they were called but the battery went in the handle part and the lighter part was like a thick knitting needle about 6" long.. they were very handy things but I haven't seen one for millions of years.

Mardatha Amazon stok lots of different ones, or Wilkinson's here stock them.

Ive been re-stocking slowly for weeks after the kitchen refit. It's been a good opportunity to think gardening and change my stock to be honest. I'm not restocking a lot of the dried pulses I used to buy in bulk, just the split peas, red lentils and black eyed beans we use lots of in soups I can make in the slow cooker. Tinned pulses keep just as long, and are a lot more friendly in terms of fuel needed to cook them. They are automatically portion controlled too.
I've finally audited the Armageddon cupboard and I think the only thing we're short of now is tinned fruit. I like yogurt, fruit and nuts for breakfast - maybe that would be an option for you Jojo - and although my freezer is heaving with stewed apples I do like a variety of choices.
So it's tinned fruit for me to add to my stash over the next few weeks.:)
