:) This is an interesting post on food waste, on an American website I rate and read regularly. The data is British: https://modernsurvivalblog.com/survival-kitchen/top-20-foods-wasted/

Thriftwizard and DigForVictory - I haven't been around much lately but I'm sorry that you're both under the weather. x

GQ - interesting reading. Made me think.

I have to confess that prepping has taken a back seat here for weeks now. I was in France for a lot longer than I'd anticipated and since I came back I have had to help MrC to make some hard decisions regarding our allotments. It us just not realistic for us to keep them all on as we cannot work them properly any longer. We are giving up our bees, the last hives are being collected on Saturday, and our full allotment plot will be handed back on Sunday. We are keeping our half plot, and our fruit plot for another year but we will not be getting any more chickens once our old ladies leave us.
We are not going to stop prepping though. I intend to reaudit our pantry and freezer stock over the next few weeks and to restock everything MrC used while I was away. The way prices are rising will give me all the motivation I need, and I'll try to post regularly again, Reading this thread is a really good way of reminding me what I need to be doing.

Realism is all, Cappella - I'm sorry you're needing to give up the chickens and the allotments, but needs must :( and yes, your prepping will change, but it's still preppping. Stay with us!

:) I took on an extra half plot earlier this year, right beside the existing full-size plot. Have opened up the dividing fence (which I put up anyway) in only two places.

I intend to plant anything semi-permanant like fruit bushes on Plot1, in recognition that I may have to eventually retreat back onto that one and surrender Plot2. I'm relatively young in gardening years, but the old arthritis is kicking in.

I'll keep on trucking as long as I can but, inevitably, we have to acknowledge that age and infirmaties mean we have to cut our coats according to our cloth. Nor brilliant or joyous, but stuff happens and we have to go with the flow.

GQ and Karmacat. You're both so right. We have to be realistic about things, but we don't need to completely give up yet and are hoping this will give us a few more years to enjoy the plots.

The waste food article made me think. It wasn't really news to me, but I've been very conscious that we've thrown out a lot of bits and pieces here over the past weeks - mainly to the chickens so not completely wasted - and as I will be buying more as I will be growing less now would be a good time to tighten up in my kitchen. Might as well throw money in the bin as food. After all it had to be paid for. Think I'll go and read through JackieO's thread for some inspiration :) Avoiding waste is surely part of prepping?

You beat me to it Karma :) I think prepping is all about understanding needs - there is no point in having a mountain of tinned food if you don't have or can't use a tin-opener. :rotfl:

All is hectic here - with a good dollop of aches for good measure. My house-sitters arrive on Saturday and I'm UK bound Tuesday. Hopefully, I'll have a bit more time to contribute after then,

Get well soon to all those who need it. xx

  • Much cooler today than it has been of late and forecast to be cooler still for the next few days. Makes me thankful to have the warmer winter clothing that I've invested in over the years ready to use to stay warm no matter how cold it is outside. Prepping makes such good sense doesn't it?

:) I think wood ash only, Mar. Something about when you burn wood and plant materials, you get potash, when you burn coal, there are other things in it. Could be useful to keep some handy to spread on snowy paths, tho?

The other thing is that coal and anthracite ash when wet are really heavy and they smother the roots of plants if you use as a mulch.

  • I'm stocking up my store cupboard again and have found that Morrisons are doing smaller tins of cooked pulses for 50pish enough to feed two for one meal with other things. Thinking along the lines of possibly having no electricity and therefore no way of 'keeping' extra portions of food the smaller tins would let me cook and use at one meal which would be sensible.

:) I was thinking along those same lines when I moved away from bigger tins of fish to small tins of sardines and pilchards. Enough for me, eat in one go, no risk of food poisioning if no refridgeration available.
