I pick my moment, waiting around until there is no sign of people beng overly busy or harrassed, then approach with a smile and an 'excuse me please, but I was wondering what you were going to do with that bubblewrap (or whatever) when you've finished and if I could have some of it, please?'
I find asking for 'some' even if I want the lot, less greedy-seeming and they usually offer the lot and are pleased to get rid of it. As thriftwizard notes above, getting rid of stuff is often expensive and/ or a nuisance for businesses and they're only too pleased to let you cart it away.
And I always thank people very nicely, too.Have had a bit of a screw-up in the last hour and realised that I have left my wallet in my pal's shop and that the keys to it are now an hour's drive away. I came home and got another of my wallets, with plenty of cash in, and have rung him at home and he'll put it in the safe when he opens the store on Monday and I'll collect it Monday afternoon after work. If I hadn't a secondary wallet, the next 48 hrs might have been slightly inconvenient.:o
Have also shopped Wilk0 for the heavily discounted seeds which are flying outta there at a pace which makes the proverbial hot cakes seem like a slow-moving line. That's next Spring's bee-friendly flowery bits on the allotments all sorted out. :jEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

We ALWAYS ask, if they say NO you've lost nothing if they say YES gain all round and asking costs nothing so try it, most times the answer is yes because many folk don't like wasting stuff!0

I would guess the difference is saying it about yourself rather than other's saying it about you - The depreciation of self in British physiology.
GQ has the confidence to ask for something when other's might see the same behaviour as overly forward or rude - she's not doing anything wrong and is, almost certainly, not pushy or entitled about her requests - but someone more 'conformist' might be scandalised that she's asking for 'freebees' and, to that person, she'd be behaving unacceptably.
Personally I do the same - toddle over with a smile and ask 'would you mind...' and if they say no then I thank them, smile and toddle off again.
Ex-MIL was disgusted by my 'cheek', but then... that just added to the delight of doing it in front of her:D

ETA Very well prepped there, GQ, with the secondary wallet! What an excellent idea!0 -
Very well prepped there, GQ, with the secondary wallet! What an excellent idea
Hear hear! I have a "business" wallet & a "family" wallet & rarely carry both, so I suppose I do have a kind-of secondary wallet, and I'd certainly use business money for the family if need be. But it would make great sense to have a proper back-up and I shall nick that idea forthwith!Angie - GC Aug25: £374.16/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
Never have all one's cash in one place.
My pal's shop is done up like fort knox so, though I don't like not having my wallet at hand, it's pretty safe in there. Unless he gets burgled between now and 09.00 am Monday.
When I renewed my photocard driver's license, I accidentally-on-purpose forgot to send back the old license, which I keep with my BOB documents. The current passport is with them, the old passport is with the the copies of crucial documents at the 'rents. My photgraphic negatives are aslo in a folder over there.
Being able to prove your ID is pretty crucial at times. The old license has been taken by a pal to collect a parcel from the sorting office on my behalf before now.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Floating around FluTrackers and things are getting interesting...
On 6th Sept, about 100 passengers on a flight from Dubai were taken ill during the flight and met by medical personnel at JFK airport. Some have been kept in hospital.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-45432813
And thennn - multiple passengers on various flights into Philadephia Int Airport - on the same day, the 6th - were taken ill on the flights.
https://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2018/09/06/philadelphia-international-airport-cdc-investigating-multiple-passengers-sick-international-flights/
Illness currently looks like flu but they have not said which strain. And it must be a hell of an infectious flu if they boarded a flight ok in Dubai and came off it ill in New York. :eek:0 -
Our Wilkos has taken down all its gardening stuff to make room for 'off to Uni' stock:(It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

The frightening thing is a lot of the slightly less poorly ones were just asked to fill in a form by CDC and then allowed to just melt away to spread whatever it is they are incubating. Sounds like it could be MERS (like SARS but Middle Eastern in origin). Dear Lord not pandemic flu!
Don't think I'll be going Christmas shopping in New York this year. (Well I've never been Christmas shopping in New York so why break the habit of a lifetime)It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

You have reminded me I need to renew my passport, I have had the forms for over a month and need to get a photo and a person to co sign, I did not want to get it done in Spring and summer as things were likely to be busy. Ironic to think that in the late sixties I used to issue British visitors one year passports and check the proper passports before being sent off. I am not sure I will be using the passport to travel but more as proof of identity.
I also need to make sure I always have some cash that is not in my purse. My bank card was hacked or whatever the term is twice in six months or less a year ago and it was a pain waiting for a new card.
Since then I have only been withdrawing cash at a local post office or else inside a bank using their machines and that seems to have helped.0 -

I have not looked at flutrackers and the other sites for a while,. The realisation that being a "flubie" did not stop me being hospitalised with pneumonia and blood clots in my lungs a few years ago dampened my enthusiasm a bit.
My gp has sent me a letter saying they have a special type of flu jab but not doing it till late October or early November so I am now wondering if I should get a jab earlier elsewhere as well as the gp one.0
