Thanks for the comments on screw lidded jars for dehydrated foods. The jars that are currently put by aren't as well-screwing (if you see what I mean :D) as kilner jars - just normal supermarket jars, that have held beetroot or pickled onions, stuff like that. But all you can do is experiment, make a note of when you packed it, and keep an eye on it.

Got another kilo of broccoli in the dehydrator right now, actually - the previous lot is actually in a plastic sandwich box in the fridge :o I might put that in at the end of the run for an hour or so, and then pack it all away in a proper glass jar of some description.

I'm thinking ahead to winter, to be honest - normal flu season, let alone a pandemic. I don't want to have to expose myself to germs unless utterly necessary, so dehydrated greens, plus freshly grown microgreens, will be a big help. And its good training for the zombie apocalypse :p

  • My store cupboard shelves are bare of food and stored water, it feels absolutely WRONG! we have 7 tins of tomatoes left, 6 tins of baked beans and no loo rolls other than the 3 in both bathrooms and I've nothing in the garden, we've given up the allotment and I've made no preserves or dehydrated anything this year. I don't feel like ME!!!

MrsL not long now and I'm sure you'll be back to normal in no time. It is scary to have very little stores though.
I have added to my stores extra basmati rice x 2, conchiglie pasta, OTC painkillers and 10 x granulated sweetener. I like to buy at least 10 at a time and I admit to getting a bit twitchy, as there was only 1 left in my stores .
I used to like the Vesta risotto too but you are only able to get the curry or chow mein around here :(.
I picked the last of my blackberries today, but the rhubarb from Dad's keeps on coming. I am stewing it, then freezing at present, until I have more free time. This retirement lark doesn't live up to it's reputation as I never seem to have enough time :rotfl:.
The shed prepping is still ongoing too, the roof is on and hopefully tomorrow we can reinstall the windows and fit the new door, well it's an old outhouse door really, but at least it's not rotten like the old shed one .
Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently

    Absolutely :)

I've put a kilo of shop-bought broccoli through the dehydrator. Baby steps.

I du derstand how you feel MrsLW but it's going to be really good fun deciding how you're going to prep when you get to your new home. I felt exactly the same here a few months ago when we had all the work done in the house but now I'm glad I was forced o start all over again. There are some things I'd stock piled that I just don't any more, and some things that I've added that I didn't used to bother with (a lot less rice, more tinned fruit)
I sat down and made lists - I do love ticking things off lists - and really enjoyed myself sorting out a whole new direction to move in it as regards our daily diet, and the prepping implications.
You're bound to feel a little unmoored at the momen, but the moment you tie that rope to the bollard at your new mooring you'll be fine :) (apologies - was sorting out books to cull and got sidetracked by Swallows and Amazons :o).
  • Most poetic! I luvs it!

I know I'll be able to restock and yes, I'll be doing it slightly differently because I've refined it slightly more to our taste rather than going for bulk and bargains. It just feels really peculiar walking into the store and seeing the shelves empty! I gave a lot of home made preserves to my neighbours daughter this afternoon, some back as far as 2010 and as she said 'Oh we'll eat it all, we're not precious' I kept a box of mixed for us too but I'll make smaller batches of more variety in the future, there is such a thing as too much redcurrant jelly (20 jars). I just feel exposed if that's the right way to put it, unprotected perhaps fits better, and odd!

    Mrs LW....found you. :rotfl: I'm not,stalking, honest.

It's really odd isn't it, this living in limbo milarky. I look at my almost empty freezer and cupboards and I feel quite twitchy......:rotfl:

:j:j The garden trolley has landed! Whee!

OK, it's landed at the parental home and I'm not there until the weekend, but I'm so chuffed that it's come. Ordered on Sunday. We will assemble it and I shall bring it back to the city in my pal's car then it'll be preptastic trundling all the way.
