  • Doing a quick flip round Tesco this morning I saw for the first time, Muller's butter, marked as English, in a cute wrapper patterned in black and white like the cows (and like the Muller's milk tanker we see collecting milk from local dairy farms).

Also first time I've seen the Welsh brand Calon Wen butter in our local branch.

Perhaps we will be getting more local choices in future. Incidentally, prices were comparable with all the usual brands on offer. That may not last of course.

Stock cubes I buy from Costco, along with meat, laundry stuff, shampoo and olive oil.

What on earth do you cook with that lot? :D
  • I put three tealights in that stand I bought the other day, and then compared the brightness to the light produced by the LED lantern I bought the other day.

    There's absolutely no comparison.

I reckon you would need to light a whole bag of tealights, to get anywhere near the light output of the LED lantern, and the tealights wouldn't last anywhere near as long as a set of batteries.

:) I've personally got enough tinned sardines to withstand a siege (I go for the ones in oil as opposed to tomato sauce as they are longer-dated). And am rotating through the tinned tattie stash atm.

I've stocked up on jars of olives and olive oil, getting the latter at a 1 litre for 500 ml price which Liddly do periodically. I also have plenty of corned beef, sweetcorn and a few other bits & bobs.

A trip to Sainsbugs will probably feature in the near-future as I like their red label loose leaf tea and am coming towards the end of the current stash.

I have been having a pleasant time making out like a bandit at my local little Mr T where they have been reducing some shelf-stable foods with several years' date on them to pennies. Asked one of the cashiers why and was told these products had been found in their back room by a regional manager - they'd been misdelivered to the Little Mr T when they were brands/ sizes only sold in Big Ts so couldn't go out at full retail and couldn't be sent onto a bigger store. Da Management were told to get them outta there asap, hence the insane discounts.

:j I like insane discounts, I shall go up there shortly and see if I can find some more of them, it makes The Stash grow rapidly but cheaply.

  • Our local one stop does something similar once in a while, the shop area is really small, it used to be the local post office which is now housed in a telephone box sized cubicle within the shop. They have special offers which are displayed on the ends of aisles and no room in the stock room to keep anything that isn't sold in the period of whatever the offer is so they knock them out at a ridiculous discount which is received very gratefully by moi if it's something I'd use. One Stop is also run by Tesco.

:D Glad you're getting the benefit of similar deals, Lyn!

I shall take the wally-trolley up there tonight, may not need it, but some of these bargains are canned goods and the weight soon add up.

There's an old saying to the effect that the time to economise is when the flour sack is full; when you're skint you have relatively few options. I figure if I have a source of protein and some spuds, whether HG or canned, I can forage edible greens and live quite satisfactorily with all the major food groups covered.

I have also stocked up on extra mature cheddar which was reduced crazily (in date until October) because a promotion had ended( Idid ask). Hey, if they want to turn out a big block of cheddar for a squid, I shan't be complaining too much.:rotfl:

I think you can put alerts on My Supermarket to tell you when there are offers. Needless to say, you don't often get offers on unprocessed natural foods. Although Rose Waite does occasionally have deals on baking ingredients and I fill my stash full of their organic flour when that happens
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Ha don't own one of those either! When we moved into this house the kitchen was tiny ( I am talking so small that you had to shuffle to get past the hob and the fridge was in the hallway tiny) so all appliances that were not essential had to go. Building work on the new kitchen is now finished but I got so used to not having them I don't miss them. I do have a bowl mixer which I got as a happy new kitchen gift!

I miss good bargains as our local shops rarely have any. Where we lived before had fantastic bargains and I had a chest freezer to house them in.

:j Been at a car boot this morning (shopping, not selling btw) and have come back with some preptastic things including a solar torch and a brand new LED lantern. Plus another blue enamel bowl to match the one I bought from a fair a couple of years back. These are several ££ each new, I'm paying 50p each for mine.

Am serously-considering going camping in September, gathering a few bits & bobs together ahead of time.
