Ah, thanks fuddle. I had an idea she'd mentioned a trip but wasn't sure
Apparently while I'm visiting my sister-in-law we're going to a beerfest in the town where her son and DIL live. The food will be Stecklfisch, which Google tells me is gutted whole freshwater fish grilled on a stick. Hmm. Might be ok, as long as it's not mackerel, can't stand the smell _pale_ though I expect there will be something else for people who don't like fish.
You get your beer in a "Stein" (earthenware tankard) and pay a deposit on the first drink, then when you've finished and take the Stein back to the stall you get your deposit back. Or you can opt to buy the Stein and take it home with you.
ETA OH dear, she says it is mackerel. Oh well, maybe I'll learn to like it.0 -
Thank you Fuddle. I am glad she is ok.
No internet for a while, we changed providers and there was a hiccup, so have been catching up with this thread.
I only use my debit card once a month to take the housekeeping and personal cash out, and keep the money in a very safe place here so I had not realised Visa had crashed. I prefer to operate a mainly cash economy anyway. It is easier to appreciate how quickly I spend real money, it is far too easy to flash the plastic and regret it later.
Frightening though potentially for those who have no cash and are stuck with no way to pay for petrol or tickets home. I am very glad I topped up our emergency cash stash as well this month though. Better safe than sorry and it just shows how easily problems can arise.0 -
Karmacat, I was told that weeds that were likely to run to seed were best put in a bucket of water and kept covered for a couple of weeks to rot down, and then added to the compost heap - supposedly it stops them seeding. I haven't tested this out, though, because I was dealing with dandelions and apparently they can regenerate from a tiny piece of root. I'm now pretending the dandelions are part of a herbal tea project.
And I've just had to pay cash at the garage on the way home - fortunately I had some, but it's the first time in months I'd let the tank dip below half full. Typical. Luckily thanks to this site my cupboard is full of emergency rations - I'm going to be staying home tomorrow if this Visa saga continues.0 -
Does anyone else get strings of letters and weird numbers whenever they try to use an apostrophe? It has been happening to me for months now and it is driving me mad. I!!!8217;ve reported it to the board guides but had no reply. I wonder if it!!!8217;s because I!!!8217;m using a tablet rather than a laptop.0

I'm the same Cappella, get money out of the bank the day it goes in. But online groceries are a must for us now and for that you need to use the damn stupid card. If it isnt fixed and I don't get my shopping we'll just nip up to Aldi and get the essentials. I bet a few people who are caught up in this mess today will turn into preppers because of it!0

Mardatha I hadn’t thought about online shopping. I’m really glad you mentioned it. I’d better check that my friend is ok for groceries, she is housebound and relies on on-line supermarket shopping deliveries.
I wonder how long it will be before the system is repaired - and how long before it then crashes again?
Interesting times indeed.0 -

Ivyleaf, you can learn to love new things, but being determined to try and like it helps. Mind, so does being on holiday! And if you really can't stand the taste, fingers crossed you're OK with the smell. As dabbing oil of peppermint on your top lip can confuse folk, but it does mean you can walk through a cloud of strong smell without too much distress. (So I'm told - my sense of smell is very poor to the point of near nonexistent.)
There's a visa issue? Not had any issues today, but happily I do have the emergency cash stash. Plus the just-in-case my chaps found in the car, dashit. Neither of which I would have had without this board's sage advice, so thank you all who post!0 -
Capella it is a tablet issue. Go to settings/keyboard and turn off smart punctuation and that should fix it. Then try typing something with an apostrophe to show us !!It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
