    Don't mention FROST!

I have spuds up and am about to sow a batch of runner beans in the cold frame. Once they're out, there may still be a risk of frost, but I'm prepared to take a punt and risk mebbe having to sow a 2nd batch.

Funnily, the bumblebees go mad for the broad bean and lavender flowers, but aren't particularly interested in the runner beans, and vice versa.

  • We've had climbing French beans and early peas growing on in the poly tunnel for about a month now and they're growing but slowly. I don't think the crop in there will be substantially earlier than outdoor grown beans this year. We were lucky to find some fine bean seeds called Ferrari which are an F1 hybrid and so flavoursome. They must have had viability problems as they haven't been available for a few years now but have made a come back and are sprouting nicely on our bedroom window sill. Good croppers too so I'm looking forward to the first pickings in due time.

Having trouble logging on with Halifax this morning. halifax is part of LLoyds and the TSB debacle arose because they are trying to separate their IT system from LLoyds. DH can't log into LLoyds either. Knock on effect?
:p You think it's bad now?!

I must admit to a fondness for this website. I also have an unfondness for TSB since they repo'd the flat of a pal back in the 1980s............ Never let the passage of time interfere with a good grudge, say I. ;)

Anyone had any problem with EE broadband this evening?

Mine keeps dropping out, and having to reconnect. Still did this even after swapping modems.

Maryb Will a blood test show ME? If so maybe it would be worth having it checked anyway, even though you up your vitamin and mineral uptake?

We have now had no kitchen for over a week, and will not have one for another ten days as there are unexpected issues with water and gas pipes. Now we have no microwave either so all my home cooked ready meals prepped ready for all of the renovations are of little use. We also currently have no water or electricity from 8 in the morning until the early evening. Apart from tinned soup, beans and fried food what can I cook for two people, fairly quickly, on a one ring gas cooker. Builders leave about seven and we are very hungry by then.
It seems that either I am too tired to think clearly or I am not as well prepared as I thought I was and my girl guide and prepping skills need sharpening up :o
Just stepping out from the lurking shadows to reply.
Bread and salad and stir-frys are obvious suggestions.
You can soak dried pasta for three hours and it will cook as quick as fresh, which means it can be cooked fast or simply added to the sauce at the end.
Cous cous only needs hot water and 5 minutes so can be started in a jug while you cook the rest.
You can also use a hay box method, starting one pot off on the ring and insulatingit forthree or four hours, this means you can have two pot meals. You don't need a fancy box or bag, I use an old duvet shoved into a washing basket. I do this to save fuel, rice comes out lovely but meat can be done too. You can research that method online. Hope this helps.

I would cut down on the cooking by choosing some ready to eat things - such as tinned mixed beans and beef/ham trim etc to use in salads. Add some crusty bread and job done!
Also I made a tasty one pot meal on the multifuel stove recently. Fried some cut up bacon, mushrooms and onions in a pan, added boxed (just because I prefer boxes to tins) tomatoes then some thin fresh supermarket spaghetti - which only takes a few minutes. Season to taste (I added garlic salt and chilli and drizzled with sesame oil). Yumm....:T

No blood or any other kind of test for ME.
  • Just got back from my first hospital Diabetic consultation.

In just 4 months, my blood glucose reading (I think it's called the HbA1c) has plunged from 98 to 33.

As a result, the doctor has discharged me back to my GP, so I won't need to visit the hospital again.

Also, he says that if my readings stay the same, I might be able to come off the medicine, and control it purely by diet.
