Definite rumblings in the Scots weather forum re a bad summer on the way. Already the farmers are struggling, and one farmer posted this:
"The damage from the start of March is begining to emerge from the melting drifts as hundreds of dead sheep are discovered in the hilly areas of the borders and central Scotland. These hardy Blackface sheep are always left to fend for themselves on the hill and normally can survive most storms but I believe the depth of drifts is the worst seen for decades."
  • Weather has just taken a rapid turn for the worse.

    It's now persisting down. :(

Oh goodness, that's awful, sad for the sheep even more so for the farmers who are already struggling one way or another.. Here's hoping the weather can make a turn around, though the post from Riverford Organic earlier was also one of worry, due to weather no seeds have been sown at all so far this year! :(

Nothing to do with prepping - unless having decent reading on your kindle qualifies? - but this book is currently free and was rather fun: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01DGLI484/

Short stories so easy to pick up and put down.
Me-Time Tales: Tea breaks for mature women and curious men

Women of all ages are unlocked in this collection of witty short stories with a dark edge: Marian faces middle age with attitude and support knickers; sixteen-year-old Jess's date with good legs; Peggy fights for her first bra; post-war Elfreda frees herself at a First Feast. Discover Elaine's encounter with a moral dilemma, a neurotic narrator's self-enhancing theft, Pru's ingestion, Dary's piscatorial impregnation and an unnamed beauty's transmogrification. There's a loving mattress a mangy dog and a prosthesis, plus a lady who cannot admit to her name, let alone her age.

    Happy chocolate day all!
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Bob, try taking Floradix instead of the prescription iron tablets, which upset most people's digestion. Much kinder to your system, and the iron is very much more bio-available.

+1 for Floradix, which made the early weeks of new motherhood survivable for us all.

There are several iron compounds and if one "doesn't suit", your GP should be able to move you to one of several anothers.

I had wool stashed - son, looking for wool to knit to show off a broach he'd carved (cute), has left them part open & scattered & has now sorted a mount on a chunk of polyester fleece. I may have to wait til he gets back from his tryst before I can make him tidy up a bit...

This is very bad news, on all sorts of levels, but particularly horrible to think of the sheep dying like this :(

Prices later in the year *might* be affected ... makes me more determined than ever to use the crops from my little garden, and get planting more. I've just been cutting back the top of the neighbour's ivy, which climbs over our joint wall at a rate of knots :( it shades the quince that's planted on my side. I'd never have planted it there, but now it *is* there, I want it to flower and grow some fruit, which its done a couple of times since I've been here, but didn't do anything last year.

  • That Fybogel is definitely having the desired effect.
  • Is anyone else planning on getting in a very good stock of tinned fruit and veg just in case we get some crop failures or shortages this year? Given that most tins have at least a couple of years on just the 'best before' date it seems only prudent as a prepper to do so. It's probably worth making the decision and acting on it now before inevitable price rises happen later on!
  • Already got a decent stock of canned (and packet) foods. :)
