FB is a means of communication, fwe can use it without getting pulled into the brainlessness of it :D
Agree with GQ and MrsL re wool and the right clothes.
Wishing I hadn't thrown out some powdered milk that was past it's sell-by date - it doesn't look like we're going to get in or out of here anytime soon. I have about 8 pints in the fridge and some longlife milk - but we go through an awful lot.
  • The JOY of yak trax!!!

He Who Knows persuaded me to put on my boots and yak trax and actually go for a walk, to prove to me that I could stay upright and not do a Bambi on the ice impression which is what happened last time we had snow and I was trying to walk Docky dog. Wonderful things even on compacted snow that has turned to sheet ice. A walking pole helped too and we walked the route I normally take Cookie on along the footpaths and lanes and down to the river and home again. It was lovely out there, cold but we were toasty warm, thank goodness for my Goose Down Jacket and the curved glasses made all the difference in the world to my eyes. If we had to evacuate in this weather now I KNOW we'd be able to do it. I was surprised at how easy it was to walk with what we had on, so nice to be out and about and everyone we met was happy too. On the open field down to the river there were a multitude of small and breathless youngsters zipping down the slope on their sledges, wish I had one!!!

I don't like Facebook at all but it is useful and I do use it. I hardly post although yesterday I did - my two cherubs in their igloo.

When I say local I don't mean where I live. That's ok and the surrounding smaller groups are ok. I think it's because they are all known to each other so they can't be a faceless keyboard warrior. The regional groups, however, are constantly complaining, arguing, bragging or being deliberately contentious. It's ugly and normally I don't read but with the weather I'm on a lot trying to get a feel for the locality... ok, being nosey!

I used my Yaktrax when we had to go for a hospital appt on Wednesday but although they are wonderful, I find them a struggle to get on and off so I keep them on a pair of shoes which I keep just for that purpose while the snow lasts. But you have to change as soon as you get inside, they are very slippy on smooth floors.

And here in suburbia, people often clear a bit of pavement so you are going from snow to clear and back again in a short distance. They don't work so well then
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Having just said that and I spotted a Facebook post put up today on a local one and the replies to it. Initial post was helpful - and all except one reply was "thanks for the help". I have no idea what that one reply said as I didnt understand it (Google Translate is pretty useless anyway) - so just left it thanked every post before it and every post after it.

Rousing cheers for the right clothing & the right technology!

The downpipe was swaying in the breeze, making sinks drain into the shower cube & so we found all three bits of ladder, assembled it all, and middleson undulated up with a length of wire in his teeth.

A temporary fix, but a huge relief.

Although we now have a defrosting ladder dripping in a storage space & blocking an access track, we have a great deal more confidence using assorted sinks & an unspeakably clean shower cube - it had Every Chemical to hand chucked down it to both cleanse & discourage refreezing. (Mostly salt.)

Oh aye & if anyone tries to convince me Spring is here, I have proof of winter - the condensate pipe overflow froze (again), effectively switching off the boiler. The cheerful Hindu can fling coloured powders around all they like - I'm sticking to the hot chocolate for those who climb ladders, & tea for me...

All project manged by Himself who (despite the ladder related issues) remains in my good books since he brought home a glorious olive green Guernsey. There is Nothing like Real Wool. (Although 30% possum, 60 % merino, 10% silk sounds Amazing!)

Facebook is handy when used correctly. My OH has a nephew whose wife died suddenly from a stroke (only 40 something, tragic) some years ago. Her mother and sister got hold of a copy of her death certificate and posted it on FB. Needless to say, the grieving widower promptly cut all contact with them. People can be such plankton sometimes.

GQ I have a hat from NZ made of the same type of yarn. I'm astonished that something so light can be so warm and windproof :) Enjoy your Mobius strip!

I'm staying warm and cosy inside because the snow's too deep to walk outside lol. My youngest son phoned and said can dad walk down to the main road and meet me, I'm parked at the bus stop. RV staggered off through the snow and found son waiting with milk and bread! Took the milk with thanks. Son lives 20 miles over the back road through the hills which is closed with deep drifts, and had driven miles round the long way to bring this to us, He has a 4x4. MY TEA IS SAFE!

This is Carter Bar, at the English border - but it looks identical to the road into this village :)
