Another good stove gadget - mine's actually multi-fuel but we only burn wood, so as to be able to use the ash in the garden or at the 'lottie - is a chestnut pan. Mine came from a car boot sale for £1; we use it when the fire has burned right down, with the door slightly open and the pan, which is lidded with a long handle, resting on the hot embers. The chestnut supply for this year has just trickled to an end, but we've had 3 months of delicious hot roasted chestnuts with that crispy tang that you only get from roasting them on a fire.
it's all of them (not just some of them) that have been found to cause pollution

Some more than others... BUT even turning on an electric light causes pollution, MTSM It just doesn't cause it directly on your street, but miles away at the power station. A well-run stove with a regularly-swept chimney shouldn't puff & blow too much; when ours is going there's just a tiny wisp of white smoke visible from the chimney-pot every now & then. But sometimes you do see clouds of dirty smoke emerging from chimneys round here, when people are burning damp stuff, or stuff with paint on, or haven't got it up to temperature fast enough. Modern stoves have what's called a secondary burn, which will re-ignite combustion gases before they escape up the chimney; that's what they are so much more efficient than an open fire. Just about everything we do causes pollution one way or another; we just have to work out what works best for us and does the least damage.

Mar I know you have a bad weather warning up there so I can see why you were quick to get back. Has the snow started yet? You'll know in yourself when enough is enough in terms of something being wrong with your health. Let's just get you through the weekend all snug eh?

Off to go read about chestnut pans now. :D

    It's snowing again here.

It's not actually snowing here now, but it was earlier, and it stuck. :(

I could manage if my boiler went

Me too, but it wouldn't be for long, because this is a Council rent.
  • Hello, I am an occasional lurker who appreciates the forum - you are all talented writers! The lady with the shoulder pain has prompted me to register. I don't wish to worry anyone but I would urge you to investigate heart issues as a source of both shoulder pain and breathlessness. Symptoms of heart problems in women can be different to what is typically expected. Best wishes.

There's an STV video on FB that shows my wee road and my home ground. It's about the Gritter that works in this area and you can see how much we've got. Npt sure if this will work, but go to her page and it's the video called GRITTER.

_pale_ Good grief ... thats quite a video.

I'm at a similar latitude to thriftwizard, I feel weirdly ashamed of the brambles leafing up :o, the ones that I'm cutting back right now.

Be safe, Mar, you and RV both.

It's interesting to see the huge differences in this tiny wee country isn't it? I have never been away down south but my son goes to Worthing a lot to see his in-laws and he says it's tropical :D
  • Some years ago, the snow round here was so deep, it was over the bumpers on my car.

Couldn't get the car out of its parking space, let alone out of the street.
