Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
Can I jump aboard again too? Not been on a while, but my prepping learned from here helped us through a difficult patch in November when I gave up full time work due to health issues. My store cupboards and freezers were full, Christmas was half sorted and various other prepping bits and bobs made such a difference.
We were fortunate our parents taught us many skills from wallpapering, gardening - both ornamental and practical veg, cooking and sewing etc. Many which we have used constantly, over the years. I even remember my mum sitting down every Friday with the wee hard backed notebook budgeting for the week - something which I suppose was much needed in the early 70's.
Giving up work in November has seen me teach myself Fair Isle knitting, and this year we have loads of veg growing in pots, so although a big life change in some respects it has been an easier transition having these skills to call on. I have also got a band of folks together and we are in the process of sorting out ground for allotments in the town, with council backing, fingers crossed we will have land in the next six weeks.
Today's chores are baking for the week, thinning out the tomato leaves, and tying up the green beans, planting some more salad stuff and other odds and ends which will grow before winter, which is short term prepping but the extra pennies I can save go into the SHTF pot for the long term future.
Have a good Sunday - albeit another wet one here

Suzy that's a real prepping success story though so sorry you have health issues. Hope you are able to overcome them
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • Just unlurking to say DH and I are having to learn everything for ourselves. Luckily DH is trained as an electrician and has self tought (sp?) everything from mechanics to plumbing and joinery.
I've learnt cooking from scratch, preserving, gardening, sewing and just learning to knit. I'm another one who moves on when I've learnt something.
We're also trying teaching our kids (3 boys under 9) these skills too and my FIL seems keen to learn gardening from us now he's retired

With three boys under 9 I'm impressed you had time to learn all that. With luck, as they get older and can use all the skills you are teaching them, you won't always be a worn out mum!

One of the little rascals has decided to potty indoors, which she has never done before. I'm really teed off as it is not my fault her mommy has to travel. Any suggestions?
Well it could be an anxiety/behavioural thing.
Or it could be spay incontinence.
    Or a urine infection.
    Or 'marking'.
    There ya go!

It was my first thought that maybe the dog is weeing indoors as an anxiety thing (dont know quite why this hasnt happened before if so...but there may have been a "doggy incident"?).

A friends recently adopted rescue cat has quite a tendency to see off all kitty comers to "her" garden. She doesnt seem to initiate fights - but she won't accept any other cats on her territory and ends up getting upset and injured defending it. Hopefully the "marauders" will soon learn not to set paw on her garden again. Meanwhile - I'm guessing she is so determined to "see them off" precisely because she is a rescue cat and is making it plain to her owners (trans. "slaves") that she is quite happy where she is now thank you and doesnt intend to be re-homed again. So I guess that's an anxiety thing on her part? Just a shame she can't read my friends' mind about her - as my friend is obviously pretty fond of her already.

Meanwhile - I must stop procrastinating and get out into that garden again. I've come a long way towards getting it "up and running" - but still got some heavy-duty work to finish to get it "sorted". Starting to reap the rewards - I ate about 6 different types of plant from there yesterday. The experiment with trying to make "kale chips" out of dandelion leaves (ie to see if I would find them edible that way) was reasonably successful. So I removed bigger midribs from the leaves, sprayed a little olive oil on them and baked in oven for about 10 minutes. When taken out - sprinkled with sea salt. Not a "substantial" type thing to eat - but a possible useful "added extra nibble" and I'm guessing dandelion leaves have all sorts of useful nutrients in them.

    With cats, it's revenge:rotfl:

Or over excitement, if Molly the collie is anything to go by. She is only seven months old though, so a work in progress.
