There's a motivational writer called Barbara Sher who calls people like me scanners. I'm a serial specialist apparently as opposed to the type who is immersed in so many things at once they can't finish any of them.

As a prepper I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to have a base to start from in lots of areas. It takes a lot of trial and error to learn how to grow things for example but if you have the basics it could easily mean you can ramp up production without losing a year because you don't have the first clue

Around a year ago ago DD1 emailed me a link to an article that talked about "scanners", so I'm guessing it was by Barbara Sher. DD1 simply said "Remind you of anyone?" :D
I think she was just so relieved to know there were other people like her because she had never come across one!

Makes us dabblers feel good about ourselves.

There is another one whose name I can't remember who calls us Renaissance People:rotfl:

Don't somehow think I'm quite in Leonardo da Vinci's league
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Thanks for the link to the book maryb. I'll tell DD about it :)
We were thinking of Leonardo da Vinci too (or Leonard of Quirm...)

I would like to join please? I can't promise to post very often but i will read most days.

Neither of my good for nothing parents taught me anything about life, well apart from how not to parent. So i have had to pick up all i know from trial and error, adult education, you tube and this website. I am also fully aware that i will continue to learn every day.

    Regards

    I've been Money Tipped!
I'm now fully prepared for this thread to not turn out to be the definitive prepping thread. ;-)

    For you AK. :D
This is an American list so some things might not be applicable (i.e.: guns and ammo) but it's a starting place.
It's also a survival list and not a make it through a resession list.

Hello, some comments have made me think about my skills and skills that are lacking.

My mum, bless her, didn't teach me to cook. I taught myself and am quite good at it. My dad did teach me about gardening, That's useful but I have never been an ornamental gardener, I like growing food.

I am a knitter, always have something on the go, usually for friends. I can and do sew but don't really enjoy it. Technically I can crochet but I don't think anyone would ever want to wear something that I've crocheted.

I can make wine and beer.

We've got some savings, those will be depleted as we are hoping to move, I have a little gold in the form of jewellery. We keep basic food stores and my OH reckons we could hold out in a siege for a fair while.

I suppose my main thing is that I tend to make do and mend as far as possible. And if it ain't broke, I don't fix it.

I can do DIY, but not plumbing, electrics or gas, though am not great up ladders, as I feel wobblesome off the ground.

I can and do earn a decent though not lavish salary to keep my family. But this will come to an end as I am past retirement age and would like some time to do things.

I am not sure that this is enough prepping though. Perhaps I should learn some new skills.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
