Agreed. Sadly, cheel, I don't think anyone in charge believes in the lessons of history. "No more boom and bust" springs to mind :(

:( Well, we're well on the way to fascism (the partnership of politics and big business interests, united against the Little People). It's getting so blatant that you wonder whether the only logical endgame is a bloody revolution and mass murder of the Rich Kids of Instagr@m and all that crowd.

Not that I advocate violence but I think that crass displays of wealth and vulgarity when so many are living precarious lives, even in the developed countries, is an unpleasant phenomenon. If we end up with an anti-capitalistic civil insurrection, being caught dripping brand-names and jewels and driving a car costing more than most people will earn in a lifetime will probably be precarious.

More gated communities and privately-policed enclaves. Manipulation of planning laws to make sure to oiks live nowhere near the privileged.

daz Your poor sister and her neighbours - it must be very scary, but at least they're being warned I guess :(
I was going to say "Try not to worry about her." but of course how can you not?

My sister-in-law is visiting her family in the US, from Munich area, and is nervous about coming back through that particular airport and then having to go on the train. My brother is anxious about her too, but I just had to remind him that the airport is pretty big, that there are lots of trains, and that in fact the chance of her being in just the wrong place at just the wrong time is very small. Not much else I could say - after all, she can't just not come back! :(

:p They'll be very expensive to hire as they will be able to write their own ticket. Imagine Mary Poppins meets Rambo. It's an idea whose time will come, I feel.

daz, here's hoping your sister's home and that of the neighbours won't be threatened.

my sister who lives an hour outside los angeles is on evacuation alert shes quite close i am worried......i too have a life straw in my BOB.....found a 30 litre storage box in 2nd bedroom full off tins that expire in next couple of months..... enjoying relaxing day off.....take care

Is this the Sand fire near Santa Clarita? Its really grown overnight. Winds are supposed to be less today, which should help firefighters with containment. Thinking of your sister today and I'll be watching the news.

Spot on about the nannies; my friend who used to nanny was ousted from her last couple of placements in favour of ladies with better defence qualifications - and she's ex-army, in one of the more robust & hands-on branches of the service. The ladies who replaced her, in both cases, were also native speakers of Eastern European languages and altogether more fearsome & quite possibly deadly. Poor kids... Mind you, as she said, it was possible, in both cases, that they were actually being protected from their father's older but legitimate wife back home...

Seems to me, though, that Instagram, FB etc. have worked in favour of celebs & the rich. The airheads who follow them may be envious, but they seem to genuinely admire their idols, and gossip about them as if they were their best friends. Knowing more about them perhaps makes them seem more - human?

:( The trouble with the brazenly-rich is that they don't seem to understand the potential risk of kidnapping or just out-and-out attacks to which they are exposing themselves. It's very hazardous to be the beloved offspring or spouse of a very wealthy and (perhaps) justifiably loathed man. Very few people have made billions without stepping on a lot of toes.
