Rub the salt in mardatha I have back boiler envy we only have a beast of a wood stove so one half of our living space is the temperature of the Seychelles and the other half Siberia I'd risk bumping into Shackleton in my kitchen some days :rotfl:0

I'm sorry tori, just got my back up today listening to the news - wittering on about coal being finished and we can't invest in it because we signed a treaty. Meanwhile the whole of China and India happily burn coal night & day and keep warm, while we have to pay way over the odds for electricity to foreign-owned utility companies. Our govt is supposed to protect us from extortion like this instead they're probably shareholders
I'm very ratty today. I think I need more chocolate.0 -
No offense, just my twisted sense of humor mardatha.
The price of domestic coal will rocket no doubt.
Major issue is modern tech like ashp while fantastic bits of kit are only really suitable for modern built properties, old houses need to breath or they just get damp0 -
You can get a system to heat water (just water) off panels mounted on the roof. It isn't solar but something else; the tank requires a small electricity supply to power what's called a sacrificial anode, which is to attract the minerals out of the water to itself, it eventually gets clarted up and smelly and then has to be changed for another anode, hence the sacrificial bit. Other than that, it's free hot water.
I'm wracking my brains as to exactly what it's called, can't think right now, will aim to find out later today and post. They're very very good.
ETA; I've remembered - thermodynamic hot water systems.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

No offence taken tori, I was ratty not you. I'm totally cheerful and normal this morning, bright, breezy, smiling and coping.

I am still prepping for a potential move, one day. I remember the sheer panic when, after sorting the estate agent, all of a sudden the photographs have to be done. There was no time to do anything except run around like one of those fat blue flies
Today I coated two window cills with paint and touched up a few spots on wood. I also carried on with `staging` or in reality, making two rooms nicer and cosier, en suite and bathroom. Km is still very much to the fore in doing this but km has pretty well been done and now I really am prepping for that scenario, my future0 -
Meanwhile this dinosaur up on a Scottish hill has a toasty warm house (well the rooms at the front anyway) and constant unlimited very hot water - and all from one coal-burning stove... Sometimes the old ways are just fine!
I'm very jealous of your set up... I have a wood burning stove, sadly, without the back boiler, would love one of those but would take way too much work to install.
Other than that I'm sticking with oil, don't believe all the "peak oil" nonsense out there, they've been scare mongering that since the 1970s and yet to happen, think we'll be grand for a ween more years yet...
Wood (along with coal and peat) and oil works for me
(not meaning to offend anyone btw...)0 -
now this really IS scarey ma&ia stuff
