My loft window blew out in a gale, big WHOOSH like a train passing and then a whump. I think it was caused by the postman opening the letterbox just as a big gust of wind hit. We didn't know what had happened until we looked out the kitchen window and saw the window frame in bits. I had them replace it with solid wood so it can't happen again. Don't think we're to get Ophelia but its very windy up here today.0

Thank you kittie .0

Kittie do you still find Piers reliable? (I know he's fairly good for these unusual events but I was thinking generally, over the course of a season)
Do you know if he has issued his winter forecast yet? I'm sure James Madden of Exactaweather is forecasting his usual snowmaggeddonIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
If you need to tie stuff down then get ratchet straps. I had 4 large orange ones used to strap heavy items on roof racks. I have used three this morning, luckily the heavy hotbin is full and the empty water butt is behind that and so is the wheelbarrow. They are all securely strapped together. I have also strapped two very tall fancy water butts to wall fasteners, the previous `rope` had turned to dust. I have used a hacksaw on a cantilever umbrella, I had dithered about getting rid anyway, my mind was made up overnight. That is all down now and safe, all plastic is away in safe storage and small tables upturned and iffy pots put on the ground in front of a west wall
At the moment there is a rather large high blocking from europe, this might have the potentail to divert away but there is a lot of volatility so the mantra has to be to prepare for the worst and hope for the best0 -
Mainstream weather is now alerting. I've had a warning for Tuesday via AccuWeather and BBC weather. At present it's yellow 'be aware'. We generally get the kind of winds that they are forecasting though and today, without any warning, the winds are strong and are of the same wind gusts mph. I don't understand.
Mar do you often get this where there's warnings about winds that you deal with just generally?0 -
Because we're so high up here at 1000ft - I think 300m - we get 70mph winds quite often yes. High moors to the north of me, hills east & west of me, and the valley southwards. Wind can sometimes be quite scary.0

A lottie friend and neighbour has got a lightweight weathered wooden shed, it only stands on bearers. I have suggested that she places heavy things on the floor, whatever she can find. I have placed my 4x granite slabs from my umbrella handy at the front. If no-one wants then then I will get rid tomorrow but they are ideal fro shed floors. Thank goodness for husbands belt and braces approach to anything structural. My shed is weighted down with concrete
Gusts we can generally cope with but sustained winds are very damaging0 -

I've just checked, and my village (and I live at one of the highest points) is 509 feet/155 metres, which I'm assuming is above sea level.
We have had some quite strong winds over the years, but so far (fingers crossed), nothing very destructive.0 -
For anyone looking to stock up/replenish their stock, Aldi are currently selling their 4-tin multi-packs of Corale Baked Beans, for 95p, which is less than 25p a tin.
I've just bought 4 packs, and will probably pick up another 4 packs tomorrow.0 -
Awed & impressed - & wondering how the devil you lug 16 tins of beans back?
Me, I cheated. Work sent me to Leeds, I took myself to Costco, we have weighted the house down with Persil, pallets of cans of beans and tomatoes & Max.
I took my fellow trainer there & enjoyed watching the awe click over into calculation & then back into awe...0
