I agree with you there, pineapple. When I buy those I have to get out just a few at a time and put the rest away, otherwise I'd just keep munching until they were all gone!
My "Reply" screen keeps going all wide, I've no idea why but it's very annoying :mad:0 -
I've just come to the realisation that what we've done with our diet as we've been on the weight loss route is actually very relevant to prepping. We now have very little processed food of any kind in our day to day meals, we aren't reliant on bread/bakery goods any more and have almost (not quite entirely) given up cheese and sugar and we're not feeling the lack.
What we do eat is fish, chicken, fresh fruit and vegetables, lots of vegetable soups and an awful lot of pulse based/vegetable based vegetarian and vegan meals and it's just occurred to me that it IS a sustainable way to feed ourselves and although we'd probably have less protein in terms of poultry should TSHTF the fish might still be available if we could catch them and certainly the beans/peas for the dried pulses will grow in the UK and the fruit and veg can be grown here easily too. It might make sense to start taking out the 'made foods' and getting used to a different style of food before any problems occur, certainly for morale if something isn't forced on your by circumstances but is a choice made before any difficulties occur it might be a better mind set to weather the problems you face?0 -
Hear, hear, Lyn.
When my mother was growing up in a country family in the 1950s, Grandma raised chickens. There was a flock of layers and Sains' lorry came around once a week to collect the eggs and take them to the packing depot. That was a money-making exercise, there were a few bantams which laid eggs for domestic consumption.
At that time, chicken was a luxury meat for working-class families like ours as chickens were kept for the eggs, and you only ate chicken when you had an old bird gone permanantly off-lay or a superfluous c o c k e r e l (will stretch this as not sure the sweary filter won't react).
My diet is mostly veggies, with eggs, small amounts of meat, fish and nuts and seeds. I'm doing well on it. Off to work now. GQ xEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I'll never understand how people can live on veg.. how to make them taste nice? I look on them as a necessary filler-upper of corners of the plate but I don't like them. I do make soup though.
MrsL I now realise why in days gone by, people up here lived on oatmeal - because it's such a hit or miss struggle to grow regular food with our rotten weather! We've had the odd one day sun but apart from that rain rain and more rain. Yesterday was 11C and driving rain all day. I'm ready to slit me wrists nevermind eat veg0 -
oh dear mar, we are not as far up as you but it rained all day here as well, was raining when i woke up and didn't stop till i was in bed! its fine today but still a bit cloudy0

After giving up alcohol (I know, right!!!) I started on a similar sort of diet Mrs L....
No processed food, no sugar, very low carbs.
Meals for me now include fish/chicken/steak with LOADS of salad or my special favourite - a huge plate of mixed veg dressed with olive oil and lemon. Yum.

Following my recent rodent adventures, does anyone have suggestions for rodent proof storage? I've not had any visitors to the kitchen yet but never say never...
I have a lot of stuff in glass kilner jars but am looking for larger containers. I do have a big industrial type heavy duty plastic tub for kibble which may or may not be rat proof.
The other issue is fresh foods like potatoes which presumably need some air.0 -

My reply screen is doing that too and it is also jumping to the right in the process.0 -
I had the back door open yesterday while out in the garden.
This morning I went in the lounge to open the blinds, and thought something must have fallen behind the lounge door. Oh, my word, it was a frog!
He was a job to catch. I upturned a rubbish bin on him, and slid a thin board underneath, and released him outside.
I won't be leaving the door open again.0
