  • That's what we said Mar! It's crazy here at the moment, they are building 4 massive 4/5 bedroomed houses on a small field behind us, they are putting an extra house onto the side of a pair of semis at the end of the road, they've just built another bungalow on the back garden of a house that had already sold half it's garden to a developer so there are now 3 houses/bungalows in a row on one plot, this latest one has no road parking, no house parking, no direct access except via someone elses drive and no garden at all, every field has developers falling over themselves to build on it and putting in planning applications before they even own the land and we already have almost grid lock with the number of cars on the road, trying to go anywhere in the rush hour/school run means waiting for a very long time to get out of the village onto the main road, the shops are barely coping and we're getting empty shelves a couple of times a week for fresh food, the doctors, dentists and schools are all full to bursting and still the council give permission to build and if they refuse it the perishing builders go to the Building Ombudsman and get the council planners over ruled and build 'it' anyway. I WANT OUT and quickly!!!

    Just one of those days!
Just seen on the news something about a school bus crashing with a bin lorry resulting in injuries plus the death of a 14 year old. The poor family...
Puts my daily aggravations into context..

There was an item on our local news this morning saying that Southern Water is currently using the River Test for most of it's drinking water supply they're taking 136,000 gallons a day from it and the government has said it wants that reduced to 80,000 gallons a day to improve the depth of water for the environment. When the amount of building and infill building going on in the area, even in our village where they incessantly put in applications to build on every scrap of green field we have left, is put into the equation where are they going to find another water source of that magnitude and enough to service all the new builds??? crazyville!!!

we've got a lot of new building planned, and the water will be coming out of the Itchen (which last time I looked was less than an inch deep in my garden, and I know the spring has dried up). Southern Water are trying to encourage us to use less water - I've asked for a home visit so they can fit water butts for me, but no one has got back to me. So obviously they're not that bothered...
  • I've reluctantly decide that come TEOTWAWKI, we'll have to use alternatives.

    How about mouse pelts? :D

I have several large water storage canisters but I can't remember when I last changed the water ooops!

    Dose it with unscented bleach.

About 1/4 teaspoon (1.25ml) per gallon is about right.

Mix and leave to stand for 30 minutes, then sniff it.

If it doesn't smell of chlorine, repeat he dosage, and let it stand for a further 15 minutes.

Alternatively, boil vigorously (ie. a 'rolling' boil) for 7 minutes.

Thanks Bob. We didn't need to in the end as Thames Water worked like heroes and the water was back on by 6pm. DH did some plumbing work yesterday and he was panicking in case the solder had failed on one of the joints so he was quite relieved it was "only" a burst water main lol
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Some new cars these days come with a silly little undersize spare tyre which can only be used temporarily and with speed restrictions. So you have to have it changed twice. Totally pointless.

I expect that's what ours is, then - the speed is restricted to 50 mph. But at least it's a wheel, and fine for a couple of days :)

Oh Lyn, that sounds dreadful! No wonder you're planning to move

maryb So glad to hear TW were able to sort it out yesterday.

Thanks Ivyleaf, very glad because we are off for a week and getting washing done etc would have been tricky. The pressure is still a bit low but we're very grateful for their herculean efforts

Just going with the theme of 'icky' for the moment, this morning I reached for the tube of Gengigel to rub on a sore gum but the stuff inside was a different colour. Eek! I had opened the tube (same size) of rodent attractant which you use to bait traps:eek:

    Thank goodness you didn't just assume they'd reformulated it!

Talking of tubes of gel, pollyanna I bought a tube of doublebase gel this morning and will try it out overnight. It does seem to have been my Garnier night cream that set off the problem - I had stopped using it and then tried it again to see what would happen. Shame, as it seemed to work well in other respects.

maryb have a lovely break, though I expect you've already left.
