Oh aye, the living historians at Carlisle were cheerful that the sharper the moulding likely the more recently made, but that three were not moulded at all, which made dating an amusing game...
  • DD1 put me on to a very interesting online thing this morning that is focused on the happenings in the USA it's EA Worldview by Prof Scott Lucas, very interesting take on current happenings and might be relevant as a prepping tool, worth taking a look.

I think I may have mentioned this a few years ago, and it has now been happening for 12 years at this address.

I keep being awakened early in the morning by my doorbell, but no-one is there. I don't think it can be naughty children, as they would have grown out of it by now.

I tried removing the battery, but instead was disturbed by items moving on the landing, which really scared me, so I replaced the battery.

I've had peace for a couple of years now, as I always ask God not to let anything unearthly disturb me when I say my prayers. I'm sure I said it last night, but this morning the phantom bell ringer is back.

Looking online, this seems to happen to loads of people. My mother tells me she gets it also. Any thoughts?

    Try googling "phantom doorbell ring".

The first link that came up was one to a newspaper article giving possible "logical" causes for this as to what might be setting it off.

Always well imo to search for a "logical" explanation first. Then - if one has ruled out all "logical" explanations - then there might be a rather different one.

EDIT; ...and yes I've had a noise at home episode before now that there just wasn't a logical explanation for....more than a little unnerving that was...

    :) Evening all.

jk0, things which go bump in the night around here tend to be called Neighbours from Hell, nothing ever so slightly supernatural about it.

I have never knowingly been haunted and suspect I have a tin ear for the supernatural, but a pal of immense credibility had to have his house exorcised to get rid of a poltergeist.

  • I had a 'phantom door bell ring' 2.30 one morning when I was here on my own and it scared me a great deal, in fact I spent the rest of the night prowling with a heavy ebony walking stick in my hand in case anyone had seen the car had gone from the drive rung the bell to make sure there was no one in! Turned out to be very much simpler than that, the door bell was on the blink and my dog walking friend had been passing in the evening and rung the bell to tell me something and it hadn't rung, it stuck so she rang it again but pressed harder still, still nothing.....ergo 2.30 in the morning it unstuck itself and went bingley bong!!!

There's usually a very simple physical explanation for all these things no matter how scary they are in the night!!!

got caught out by my slatternly ways. Spiders' webs wafting across the motion sensor set the burglar alarm going
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

As others have said jk0, there will probably turn out to be a simple explanation. I wondered if a bird had learned to copy the sound of a doorbell, especially if it stopped happening for a couple of years and has started again as the bird could have returned after nesting elsewhere for a time, but i suppose it depends what sort of time it's happening. Though blackbirds, for example, often sing at night if there's a lot of light around.

I was frequently startled awake in the early morning, usually between 04.00and 05.00, by a sharp double knock at the door but there was never anyone there. Eventually I realised, after hearing it in the daytime one day, that it wasn't my door knocker I was hearing at all, but a car passing over a metal hatch cover (sorry, can't remember the right term) up the road. Once I knew what it was, I slept through it.

As it's worrying you a lot, would you consider moving?

The last that went bump in the night round here turned out to be a juvenile rat
Got it in a trap. I hate killing things but...
There are a lot of rats round here due to the farm and the river. In the recent hot weather I took my eye off the ball and would be cooking on an evening with the door open. There have been no signs since and I'm hoping it was just a lone rat that wandered in attracted by the delicious aroma of my home made dog food.:) But I'll carry on baiting a while yet.
Pineapple is ashamed to admit she bought a packet of chocolate covered raisins for ratty as she heard they were irresistible. But she ate every single one herself. So she got another packet and.... Darn it. They ARE irresistible!
