I've changed to knitting silk instead of wool, because the two together are unbeatable for warmth. I can't wear wool anywhere near my skin. I can cashmere lol but I not paying the price they want for it!
I remember the woman in the series with Peter Ginn (oh be still my heart!) whatsername - the one with the long red hair... She said in one of her books the main thing she noticed about living life as a Victorian was 1) it was hard work and 2) it was cold. So I think less heat and more clothes would be helpful, even if it's only to combat rising energy prices.0 -

Where do you get silk yarn Mardatha? I fancy that.
I've promised to knit DH a plain merino wool crew neck. He doesn't like V necks but he goes through the collar of crew necks really quickly because his beard stubble is quite coarse. If I knit him a jersey , I can frog the neckline rib and reknit it fairly easily.
He wants a fairly fine gauge knit so it will have to be 4 ply. Jamieson and Smith wool would be the perfect gauge but he doesn't like Shetland wool, thinks it's itchy even though he always wears a shirt underneath. I hoped to get some in the sales but no bargains to be had this year.It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I cringe at the thought of my generation and younger at the coal seam. Although their dad's and possibly granddad's will be around for the knowledge, time is ticking for that. We're a nation of pampered and protected workers now and health and safety might not like the unreliable nature of it all and add in that folks probably have high expectations on what work entails choosing to not touch it because it's hard, dangerous work. I expect that such risks in these days demand a very high wage rate and that seems like it's not likely to happen.
I'm fascinated by the silk debate. Debbie Bliss does a DK 100% silk range. I've fancied it but never invested because I felt it an unnecessary outlay for something that was not really needed but if Mar is suggesting that it's an aid to ensuring warmth I think I may well try it.0 -

He's not the only one.
BTW. Regarding apples, it an interesting fact that, an apple tree will not inherit the characteristics of its parent plant, but will be of a different species.0 -
I hadn't heard of the Icebreaker merino crew necks before. Want one!!
I really like the Breton stripe one, that would look smart under a jacket or cardigan but so warm
I will keep my eyes open but I suspect deals like yours are unique! It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I was in Winfields outdoors earlier today, and they had a Barnett Vortex compound bow in, for ~ £200.
It struck me as a possible addition to prepping supplies.
Its small size (just 34.5" long), would make it an ideal close-cover hunting bow.0 -
Colourmart do cones of silk, various weights. I got 150g of lovely ruby 100% silk but not sure yet what to do with it lol0
