A lot of so-called choice is between almost identical products at prices which are almost identical, often to the penny, from a variety of stores.
Take colour in clothing, housewares etc. The season's colours will have been set by an international organisation about 2 years' prior. You may happen to loathe those colours but they're everywhere in the season. Your choice is to put up or shut up.
Or take your purse down to the chazzer where you can harvest a variety of years' apparel in one easy place.
I eat home grown spuds. I know exactly where they came from and exactly what they grew in (unpolluted soil enriched with organic barley from one of the country's finest little indy breweries). I planted them and harvested them myself and they've been feeding me, plus the parents and kid bruv since 14th August.
I wouln'd eat at McBarstewards if you paid me, and have gone hungry rather than eat their garbage.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Having retired I find I don't really have to buy clothes that much anymore. I did have a little spending spree before Xmas as my slobbing about clothes (probably my going to work clothes several years ago) were only fit for the ragbag. My budget for clothes (including shoes/underwear) for 2017 is £150 but hopefully will only be half of that.
I do grow a few veg. in the back garden but find it hard to justify more than a few potato plants in such a limited space. Tend to grow more salad stuff for summer, although do have a nice stock of both leek and potato, and tomato soups in the freezer all made with home-grown produce. I am looking at using bags to grow potatoes this year so I can utilise the concrete areas better. Reminder actually that there was an offer of seed potatoes and bags just for postage in a magazine I was reading the other day. Will go and find that.
I read a report years ago when I was studying that most people can only manage to choose between a maximum of 6 similar items. Any more than that and their brain can't process the information properly.0 -
Not posted on this thread for while as was dealing with stuff you can't really prep for, My Dad was in and out of hospital at the start of Dec, back in on 22nd and passed away last friday.
The whole world feels wrong and upside down, how on earth can you prep for this, wasted loads of food over christmas and spent most of it feeling guilty about either leaving the kids to go to hospital or feeling bad I wasn't with Dad. Trying to be strong for the kids and my mum and sister when all i want to do is lock myself away and curl up in a ball and shut it all out.
Been reading on here to distract myself, please tell me this fog will lift. Just feels like nothing is real anymore. Has anyone else on here lost a parent, when does it start to feel real and you start to feel more normal again.

Alibobsy, I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my lovely Mum last year and miss her so much but, although it doesn't feel like it at the moment, there will come a time when you can smile when you think about him and you will always have him in your memories. I have no religious beliefs but I believe that as long as someone is remembered they are still here.
My young grandsons often ask for' Grandma's biscuits'' the coconut rings that she always had in the house, 'Grandma's stuffing' for Xmas dinner and many other things that they associate with her so, even if they forget her when they are older, they will still remember the feel of her, if that makes sense, so she will still be part of our lives.
Please try to take care of yourself at this difficult time, my thoughts are with you.0 -
Huge {{{hugs}}}, Alibobsy; I lost my Dad when I was not quite 12, and my dear stepdad just under two years ago. Don't beat yourself up about wasted food, etc.; nothing can prepare you for these things on an everyday level. You're trying to be strong, and keep a good "face" on when all you want to do is curl up & howl, and to some extent that's exactly what you should do (curl up & howl, that is, even if it's in the middle of the night) because you will feel a tiny bit better afterwards. Alibobsy - my dad died at the end of November, thankfully it was quick and peaceful (although not unexpected as he'd been given 11 months from diagnosis at New Year), so we didn't have the hospital trips. Christmas was tough, trying to make it fun for the kids while supporting my mum and each other. The important thing to remember is that however you deal with it is OK - there is no normal in these situations, everyone reacts differently. And gradually it gets easier to get on with everyday life. You'll miss him every day, and it is tough trying to support the rest of your family when sometimes you want someone to support you, but you will get through it. Take some time for yourself, maybe find a friend who you can talk to and will listen and give you a break.0
