I'm quite surprised to hear you have derelict plots around you. Round here allotments are nearly all half plots because there is so much demand and some have even been divided into quarters (though it's a remarkable thing that those gold dust quarter plots are often taken by friends of the secretary in addition to the (full sized) plots they already have)
Lots of vacant plots here or rather if they're not, they should be. There is one near me full of weed, old wheelbarrows, plastic containers, wood, etc. and heaven knows what. When I applied I thought I might have to wait two years but I applied on a Sunday night online and had the keys to a plot on the following Wednesday. It's 300 sq. yds plus an extra metre all along its length as my neighbour put his fence in the wrong place. I had asked for half a plot but was told there were none to be had. Frankly it's way too much for me at present but might be more manageable in a year or two when I retire. Half of it is covered in mypex at present to keep it under control!Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

That's what I keep having to explain to my clients. They can plan for this stuff, but they can't schedule it. Ideally they could do their jobs properly and then they wouldn't have the issues in the first place, but maybe I'll keep quiet about that bit
Have just come back from the lottie. Was a fast run to dump compostables and pick up the two IKEYA bags loaded with pernicious weeds. And some of the chard trunks and divots off their rootstocks. Will be a while getting those away to the green waste section at the tip, but every little helps.
I pulled a couple of big fat hen plants out of the spuds and disturbed what looks to be effing potatoes. With no visible scab. As the tops are still in the green, I gently pulled the soil back over the top of them so they can grow even more fabulous.I also got a rainwater shower en route, not too bad, and dry again before I got home. You can wear waterproofs in this weather but you end up wet anyway so you might as well not bother.

scab doesn't actually hurt though does it? I peel it off if it's bad and the potatoes underneath are fine.
I'm glad your potatoes are doing well (says she stifling jealous sobs)It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

Up and at 'em, cheel, hoping you have a vibrant day.
maryb, common scab is harmless but it offends my sense of aesthetics. I like my spuddies to be perfect. Sorry to upset you by mentioning them, but a promising looking harvest is such a relief after last year's pitiful results.
Lovely sunny start to the day here, also, such a shame that I have to spend the biggest chunk of it earning a living but the lottie should still be there later today and hopefully the weather will hold.
I do feel a bit like a plate-spinner with a full-sized allotment at this time of the year. I just about get one bit OK and turn around and then another bit gets rampageous. At least in late autumn/ winter, what you do stays done for a while, unlike now, when any cleared bit of ground starts sprouting weeds in nanoseconds, it seems.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Yep...I did grin to myself yesterday when I removed some weeds from part of my garden yesterday and was carefully grading them according to useful/not useful. I duly spotted a few fat hen weeds and thought "Ah! I needed a few more vegetables for over there" and carefully transplanted them on and thought "That was handy - as I couldnt find any spinach plug plants - so these will do as substitute":D
I was remembering that they are some of the weeds you dont like and, equally carefully, remove:)0
