EE want to charge me £160 to cancel!

Hi All,

So last November I renewed my plan to an 18month (10Mbps broadband + landline + TV) with the landline prepaid, that would come at about £6 per month.

I explained to the saleswoman that I will probably be leaving the country soon, but she said that it's still a good deal, because all I had to do is pay the remainder (which she let me believe that it would remain at £6 per month).

Now 8 months later that I actually need to leave the country, I've still got 10 months left from my contract so I rang to cancel, and they told me that the broadband might be at £6, but the landline from November till May (i.e. for the last 6 months) goes to +£22 pm - which amounts to £192!

Their early cancellation is £162 which is still money I don't have! I am pretty sure this was not the deal I agreed to, because I wouldn't have agreed to. Anything I can do? Would threatening them to go to Martin do it!? :)

Or giving them bad reviews on any other customer advocate sites? Which I will do anyway if I have to pay this extortion.

    The deal you entered was 18 months. You want to leave after 8 months, so you have broken the contract. Why did you renew, when you knew that you could be leaving the country?

    Why would " threatening them to go to Martin do it" work ?

    Martin wont give EE a slap on the wrists when EE have done no wrong. If you knew you were leaving why did you not get a cheaper plan or do without the TV and landline or just sign up for a 12 month (if available) contract for internet.

    When you take 18 months broadband and 12 months landline contracts as a package, it is made quite clear that the landline will be full price after the 12 months, unless you choose to prepay for another 12 months, as some providers allow.


    Therefore EE have no case to answer.

    Some people will not like this answer: If you don’t have the money to pay so cancel all your DDs, close all your bank accounts and get out of the country and make sure you don’t come back for min 6 years.

    Although I will probably not going to go ahead with this (as I might have to come back within the next 6 years), the only useful answer actually come from kingrulzuk.

    Everyone else had nothing more useful to say other than than the self-righteous "you should have known better". I was obviously mis-sold this after I had fully explained the situation to the person selling it to me.

    But the problem is that instead of trying to hit this bureaucratic, small-print, T&C culture of the private sector in UK, we're still telling each other off for not being part-time lawers in our spare time.

    I believed the salesperson. There I said it.
