Made a fab "courgetti" the other night.
It's just that I do miss nice bread. Hey ho.
We were out yesterday and needed food of some sort. The only thing that came without chips and oodles of sauce was soup - which came with half a french stick! No it's not.
I can get on OK in proper restaurants, I just go for meat or fish and either veg or salad. The problem is with "lite bites". Coffee shops are the worst, everything is wheat based. Occasionally the more enlightened ones do offer gluten free but the choice is usually very limited.
I tend to try and Have something with me, some mixed fruits and nuts, trail mix or a protein bar.
For "emergencies" when I have nothing suitable with me I go for a chunky kit Kat:rotfl:
Yes - it has some wheat but it's mainly chocolate......;)
Not suitable for Coeliacs though.
Ps Shelley. I don't know if things Have changed but when my friends daughter was diagnosed as coeliac they did get quite a lot of gluten free products on prescription. That was a few years ago.
Same with another friends child who has PKU, they got the necessary special protein shakes on prescription.
So there might be some help for you.0 -
Made this last night with some leftover cooked turkey and masses of veg.
Really, really simple, tasty sauce, although I did add some chili flakes to bump up the heat a little.
I really enjoy these programs for some meal ideas. I know the spending is outrageous on the sample families, but it wouldn't exactly be entertaining to watch someone shave £1.20 of their monthly food bill.
And it is Eat WELL for less afterall, not Eat for as little as possible...0 -
I use to be very good at feeding everyone well on a very low budget. But 2 months ago we discovered allergies and probable coeliacs in my little boy and husband, I also have to eat the restrictions as breastfeeding. Problem is now we have to be dairy, egg and gluten free my shopping bill has nearly tripled and we just can't keep going like this. We shop at aldis mostly for normal stuff and sainsburys/morrisons for allergy safe stuff.
My husband has been seriously ill with Colitis over the years, and he has realised that staying off wheat and dairy does help a lot. He is really strict about avoiding these things now, but I agree, by the time you add up the 'free from' things - it's a lot.
We buy the Tsco own brand free from loaf at £2 which is really good. Also, they do a pizza for £2, and 4 x free from cornettos for £2. He likes these things now and again. I do cook from scratch most of the time, but the man does appreciate being able to still buy a packet of biscuits! I've worked out over time what's the best value. He like meat and 2 veg, which is great for wheat free.DFW - Paid so far - 0% CC's - £2 / £2000, £27 / £1200, £32 / £1800,

Watching tonight's episode - the chickpea burgers sound lovely! My dad is watching at the same time and he went 'Urgh!' as I went 'Oooh!'
Ha! Definitely going to try them on my mum when he goes out with his dad for lunch one day!
Has anyone made the oaty bars from the episode a bit back yet? Dying to know what they're like - is Agave a necessity? Costs a bomb, can we not just use something else?0 -
I thought those burgers looked nice too. As did the 'cheap' cava!January grocery challenge £0/£300

I'm only 20 mins into the show but its really frustrating me how they aren't addressing how childish the husband is being! He needs to grow up and eat what is put in front of him! If my husband came home and turned his nose up at my food I'd kill him lolDFW beginning 24/06/16 - current balances as of 28/07/16 are:

Once I got over the shock of the husband shopping 7 days a week & spending £90  I thought they were a nice couple with lovely kids.
Chick peas & sweetcorn - my 2 ingredients from Hell.
The mini tortillas looked nice.0 -

I make chickpea burgers a lot and they are lovely. I don't buy tinned chickpeas though as they work out more expensive - I use chickpeas a lot.
I haven't made the exact bars they made but something very similar and I don't use agave. I have used honey or I find banana makes them sweet enough for me as I don't have a sweet toothThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
I made mini tortillas straight after the programme ended, thinking they would be good for work. But they all stuck in my new muffin tin. It took ages to soak and scrape and clean the tin. I think I may buy a silicone one next time I see one on offer.
I did grease the tin well before baking.
I felt sorry for the lady tonight, her husband buying his own food and what he fancied. What a cheek. £90 for her, their children and the children she looked after and £90 for him. Wasn't difficult to work out where to save money really.
I bet she got to the point where she couldn't be bothered trying with him any more, hence the reason they wereon the programme.0
