i agree that having too much in is a waste of space and money but having nothing in would cause me panic attacks
what would happen if you werent paid for a week or couldnt get out to the shops?
Ive just spotted a new show on bbc iplayer called how to be a better cook
"Lorraine Pascale: How to Be a Better Cook -1. Tony Sartori
Lorraine Pascale shows people with no kitchen confidence how to create a meal for friends and family. Lorraine helps builder Tony master a Mediterranean-inspired menu."
havent had chance to watch it yet but it might be good might be pants
I enjoyed it. Some good ideas.0 -
I think the families are getting worse. They are lucky to be able to do it but no way would I spend all that on food if I had the money.
I have watch every episode of all three series. I think it is meant for us to have a laugh at and be amazed at what people spend. They are not even living well on all that expense. I don't think people are living all that well after they have reduced their spending.
I do enjoy the recipes, they do some really good economical things that add more changes to what you can cook. When I fist came on here I did my best to reduce my spending and at the same time try to improve our diet.
I am lucky that I have good local market. There are about 5 butches, three fishmongers and a couple of stalls that do fish and game. I think there are 10 greengrocers. There is also a stall that does unlabelled frozen food. It's mostly seconds from the supermarkets and chain stores
so a quiche may be slightly bent of have a little bit of the edge of the pastry missing, not anything that effects the quality or flavour. I buy odd bits from there.
I bargain with the butchers or go at the end of the day. I think they should show people more of this sort of thing. If they kept the same family for the full series I am sure they could do more. I agree there should be more ordinary families as most of these people are spending more on just food than my entire income. I don't think I am on the lowest income on the MSE threats by any means.0 -
And a new-ish wife I believe.

I remember hearing or reading somewhere that he piles the weight on during masterchef and diets hard inbetween.0

I watched the Lorraine Pascale programme after reading about it on here. Yes, she did, come up with some lovely ideas for a splashy supper party and the guy was really thrilled with his efforts. Unfortunately I loathe polenta but some other carb would work just as well.
What amused me was that at the start of the programme when he went to the cupboard in his own kitchen, the door was covered in Slimming World certificates. Not sure if it was him or his wife (or both) that were doing it.
I know the ideas were for a one off dinner party which is fine but too many cookery programmes on TV use far too much cream or oil or other ingredients that I think should be just for treats. So it's not just eating masses of crisps and fizzy pop that's unhealthy but many of the 'posh' ingredients too. To me eating well should mean healthily too.0 -

And I'd rather have a bit of cream or butter and forego the carbs.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Has anyone tried any of the recipes? I've bought some paneer to try to meat free version of the chicken surprise. The recipe is on Facebook but it's a bit vague about how to use the paneerweaving through the chaos...0

That would be really interesting Annie, I'm sure people will be able to help. I find it hard to gauge how much to cook. I err on the side of cooking extra as my family's appetite varies. But I either freeze leftovers or try to use them for lunchesweaving through the chaos...0
