Eat Well For Less Series 3

This is a form of blind tasting, a well researched method used by food manufacturers and brands, it rules out any form of bias.
Brand influence and marketing play a huge part in peoples buying habits, as does brand loyalty, branding to all intents and purposes turns what is a commodity into something much more valuable to a manufacturer and increases profits.
For instance the cola the family were given was the cola they always bought but perhaps because of the labelling they assumed it was a cheaper alternative and thought it was awful....the message there is why buy the premium brand if you can't tell what you're drinking.
The same with the dad's beer, he was convinced it was the same beer he alway bought but it was a cheaper alternative....so why buy the brand if the cheaper alternative is the same.
However, the family knew the ketchup wasn't their normal ketchup and the mum knew her wine had been changed (last week the woman thought her wine had been changed but it hadn't) and she knew her coffee had been changed.
A blind taste test for cola was carried out with the disabled athletes. And although Pepsi came out first, Lidl was second and Coke (the market leader and most expensive) about third if I remember.
I understand about blind testing but when a person supposedly
"loves" a certain food I can't believe they can't tell the difference between that and other, usually cheaper, versions.
People in this particular programme either think a product has been changed when it hasn't or that it hasn't been changed when it has. I am fairly sure I would recognise whether something was my usual brand or not
As I said, I have tried I think all brands of baked beans as I really wanted to start using a cheaper brand than Heinz but to me, and OH, they all taste vile except Heinz.
I will happily eat cheaper brands of most things - in fact Sainsbury's basics hot chocolate both me and OH think is lovely, far nicer than the dearer well known onesThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
Those kids would be hungry in my house as I never buy or eat crisps .I grew up withnot even tasting them until I was about 14 when my eldest brother was courting his girlfriend and brought some home one night.
The old fashioned sort, 'Smiths' with a tiny blue screw of salt at the bottom. To me they were just not very nice, and I have never seen the attraction of them, plus around 5/- for less that a quarter of a spud seems a gigantic rip-off.
There seemed to be in the programme, a very nice lady who was trying to please everyone just to keep things happy, yet when she actually cooked ( and she was quite happy to give it a go) the kids and everyone else seemed to really enjoy it.Hopefully they will keep it Up perhaps it would be nice to see them in 6 months time and see if its been continued or have the kids turned back to their old ways again.0 -

Hope is not a strategy...A child is for life, not just 18 years....Don't get me started on the NHS, because you won't win...I love chaz-ing!

I like to think I could tell the difference in the coffee I drink and a substitution, but after watching the programmes from the first series and seeing the number of people who think things have been changed when they haven't and vice versa, I wonder if I would know.
I'm not a brand snob either, somethings I buy are branded and others aren't.
However, in the programme branding, marketing and image play a large part in some some people's shopping and replacing or not replacing items can perhaps open their eyes to other possibilities.0 -
What always astounds me is that most of these people can safely be assumed to be intelligent and educated people, in decent jobs (often highly professional and skilled) who do know the English language, who are able to read to a very high standard, have no problem listening to informative media and yet still can't work out a basic 2 + 2 = 4.
I don't get it, honestly I don't!0 -
I must admit I only get brands when on offer, I never pay more then £1 for a 2l fizzy bottle.
Excuse the pun but I did the blind taste test on my brother who is blind on store brand cola vs coke cola and he knew straight away also did the same with crisps and bread, he knew so couldn't swap.0 -
The cheaper colas do sometimes taste like Panda Pops!0

I try to buy as cheap as possibly, but I still end up wondering how the shopping ends up being a certain price and us running out of food.0

Anyone know where the sausages and kids dessert pots where from?0
