First Class degree at aged 51

I've gotta say that back where this all started, where Voyager said that Roccobunny's experience was not unique, I would have been really pleased to hear that if I was Roccobunny. If you do a degree at age 51 and don't have a clue whether you have "anything to offer the workplace", I would say that hearing about other people in your position would give you the confidence to know that you didn't make a mistake.
"Voyager, what are your qualifications?" What a very inelegant response to someone who had congratulated you and showed interest in your plans for the future.0 -
The key is what you want to do and whether you can afford to do it.
Do you want to get back into the workplace or do you want to study more? I absolutely knew that I wanted to do a PhD. It wasn't a particularly sensible decision as there weren't many academic jobs at the time but it was what I wanted and I would always have regretted it if I hadn't taken the chance.
At your age you are unlikely to have an academic career but you could still publish and make a niche for yourself as an independent scholar.0 -
This thread was fun! I've got a first class degree, can I come join the party? The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

That depends, Gunsandbanjos. Do you have a first class degree AND a compulsion to rain down fire and brimstone upon all those who would like to congratulate you on it? If yes, then come on in, the water's lovely!! :j
(Although a little sulphurous at this point.)0 -

Only if you got it in your 50s.
Reading this thread, and looking ahead for myself, I have a sinking feeling that my own 50s are going to be a low achievement decade
I had planned on (continued) laziness but now I have a nagging feeling that maybe I should pull my finger out....0 -

Unfortunately my degree isn't in psychology so I'm unable misinterpret innocent posts and twist people's words.
I did a useful subject instead. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -

It's a bit scary to think of her being let loose on people in need of a psychologist.
Trauma victim: I can't sleep, I can't eat, I've been on the sick for eight months now, I can't leave the house, I'm on so many drugs I don't know what day of the week it is......
Roccobunny: Yo mamma so fat, she got her arm bit off by a great white shark and didn't notice til next day.0
