£3 iPhones

Not really! Why does everyone expect complex electronics to cost pennies? So they claim $236 - this appears excessive doesn't it ?
Here's the various production costs of different handsets: http://www.techwalls.com/production-costs-of-smartphones/
You've then got to include the costs of R&D, marketing, packaging ect.
I'm sure they make a very decent markup - but a £3 phones will not be an equivalent to an iPhone. It's also unlikely to always cost £3 and it will NEVER cost that much if sold outside of India.0 -

Apple doesn't list a price, the $236 is an estimate (and other estimates) based on the cost of industry component parts.
Electronics are not dirt cheap to make esp some of the better more modern components, not to mention patent costs are usually baked into the component costs they def exceed more than £30 -
Amazing how everyone thinks R&D costs shouldn't be in the phone mark up! Yes, there is an 'Apple Premium' but, I'm willing to bet, no one on here would tolerate the £3 phone for long....Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

I think I read somewhere that an iPhone actually costs around £150 to manufacture (all-in)..IITYYHTBMAD0

Without checking exchange rates, I reckon that figure pretty much equates to the one given by Ringo.

Maybe you meant 'cost that little'.0 -
As much as I dislike to defend Apple they clearly do have massive R&D costs particularly as they now design their own ARM variants which they don't sell elsewhere. They write the bulk of the iPhone's operating system, apps, maintain the desktop software, app store etc, design their own various standards etc. and they're usually on the cutting edge which usually adds a big premium well beyond the performance benefit which is the same in many fields.

It's only fair to give them credit where it's due, their recent custom CPU designs have been extremely impressive beating the dedicated SoC companies by around a year to to get to Armv8 and their current SoCs are highly complex, particularly in the ipad.

50Twunkle - your title is grossly misleading, I think you should change it.
'copy' not 'exact copy'. What resolution is the screen? What resolution is the rear and front camera? What is the battery life? What is the processor? How much memory is there?Yeah - right - If china can make copies for less than £3
A colour touchscreen on an Android phone is not a '£3 iPhone'.0
