Why the disparity in data consumption betw mobile and broadband wifi??

I use voip (skype, etc.) a great deal. - i.e. every day of the week, several one-hour calls with video.
---Using my mifi device - consumes about 600MB-1GB download and about 100-200 MB upload
---Using wifi / broaband connection - consumes about 100-300 download and about 50 upload.
This has been my invariable experience over a long period and rigorously tested in many different ways. The calls all involve more or less the same actions, i.e. no file sharing, picture uploading, etc. Just chat with video.
This is NOT down to stochastic variation, but is consistently the pattern. Obviously the quality varies and sometimes there are breaks. But my testing is over many, many calls over many months.
Am I being hoodwinked by my mifi service provide? Or is it the nature of mobile broadband that it consumes data at THREE times the rate of wifi / broadband? (Really?)

The quality differences will be the causes. Whn connected via mifi the voip sogtware is using higher data rates. Maybe the connection is faster so it that is why the higher data rates occur. You need to adjust your software settings.

Mobile broadband will use the same amount of data as landline broadband when transferring the same amount of data.

Thank you for your reply and thoughts.

Yes, I suppose that's the most likely and certainly the parsimonious explanation. But still, it would be more understandable if the disparity were slighter (if significant, say, up to one-and-a-half times). The disparity in usage is enormous (consistently about 3 x).

Connecting through landline bb gives me three 1-hr calls per GB; through mifi, one 1-hr call per GB. The call / video / audio quality is much the same, whether I'm connected through the high-consuming mobile or the more frugal broadband.

I'll try fiddling with settings, as you suggest.
