EU Compensation after Refund - Cancelled Flight

Hi All,

Yesterday (6th) my easyJet flight for Saturday (9th) got cancelled. They have offered me an alternative flight on a different day (none available on the same day) and also a refund.

I have had to book a more expensive flight with another operator.

If take the easyJet refund can I also claim my EU compensation?

They have given no reason for the cancellation in the email or txt I received.

Thanks in advance.

You have an absolute right to re-routing under article 8 of EU regulation EC261:2004, so find the flight you want to be re-routed on, it can be on any airline, and then call them and ask to be booked on it. If they refuse, get them to e mail the refusal, then book yourself on the flight and claim the money back from them, you will probably have to start the small claims court procedure though.

Have they cancelled the flight or have you been denied boarding due to overbooking?

OK, I have already booked a replacement flight as they could not offer any flights on the same day.

I want to know will I lose my right to compensation if I accept there refund?

They cancelled the flight (no overbooking) - given no reason for the cancellation in the email or txt I received.

I think you need to establish the reason for the cancellation to understand your EU261 options.

If they are having to cancel the flight due to say strike action somewhere and aircraft traffic flow restrictions have been put in place, then compensation under the EU directive may not apply. They may state these are 'extraordinary circumstances' and strike action (if this is the case) would exclude compensation (although duty of care would still apply for travelling passengers).

I find it strange that EZY would email out a cancellation notice and not say why the flight was being cancelled. Have you looked on their website for disruption notices? If nothing there then you need to call them.

What is the flight number and routing?

I just called them, the lady did not know why it had been cancelled - it had no updates on her 'system'.

Also, I've just noticed I posed this in wrong forum. Can a mod please move it to "Flight Delay Compensation" Thanks.

Hmmm, very strange. No industrial action that I'm aware of that would impact LGW/BFS services.

I'm surprised that they could not accommodate you on a same day alternative flight as they fly the route several times each day.

Do let us know what EZY say about the cancellation reason.

They've only got one flight tomorrow (or one that has availability). Its the 14.40 and that looks like it's only got one seat left.

Thanks jpsartre, Thats what i needed to know.

I got a message from easyJet -- "We'er very sorry your flight has been cancelled due to operational reasons. We have seats available on other flights to BFS. To transfer onto a different flight, or obtain a refund please use our Flight Tracker: https://www.easyjet.com/XXX. We apologise about the inconvenience caused."
  • I have filled out the EU261 form on the easyJet webpage - they said they would be in touch in 21 days. Watch this space....
