  • I'm not exactly sure what you mean by a sync rate, but this is my most recent test. It isn't exactly good, is it?
    Date/Time Up Down 11th September 2007 20:22:22
    205 Kbps 207 Kbps
Sorry, my cut and paste didn't work that well! But that is 205 up and 207 down; both are quite common at this time of night.
  • the sync rate if you have a usb modem, will be displayed as your connection speed, or if you have a router, it will be displayed in the router config as such

    currently, my sync rate is:

DownStream Connection Speed 7616 kbps UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

but a download test site shows figures much slower due to congestion or throttling.

The max speed you'll ever get from a download site is approx 7/8ths of the sync rate
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • I use a router, which says download connection speed is 6464 and upload connection speed 448.
I just test what I am getting using one of your suggested test sites. At 20.30 this was 168 download and 186 upload -yes that is the right way round!
Other than speaking to you, the computer is essentially idle; we are not downloading anything. The worst we do at this time of the night is to have two daughters on MSN chatting to friends, endlessly...
  • PS. I am on an uncongested exchange according to the test tool you referred to earlier.
  • Ok, that suggests it is not a distance from the exchange issue, and is likely to be congestion or throttling, my figures are similar to your btw atm, sometimes rebooting the router can sort things out, but I would expect a test after midnight to be much faster.

Even if you move isp, it may be no better, it is a common problem, too many people using the internet at peak times, nothing on telly, and not enough bandwidth to cope.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • custardly,
How do you copy and paste those test results? Anything I try leaves me with a template page with no results on it!

The speed test at www.speedtest.net should give you the forum BB code to show the results.

    Like. [*URL=http://www.speedtest.net][*IMG]http://www.speedtest.net/result/183696968.png[/IMG][/url]

    without the *'s giving

But don't worry too much about that. Just do a few tests and post the text of the U/D rates.

Different times of the day would help.

I don't understand. Speedtest just appears to give you links to the results. How do you get the picture that is pasted on the Forum? Am I being thick?

When the speed test finishes you should get a screen like this:

    6gvz18i.jpg

where the red arrow I put in points to the bit you have to copy/paste into your forum posts.
