Firstly, it's worth mentioning that just because virgin "upgrade" their service to 8MB it doesn't mean you will automatically get this speed as it's limited by how close you are to your exchange (amongst other things).

Download Netstat which is a useful application to monitor any broadband useage downstream (from Internet to your computer) and upstream (from your computer to Internet). If it's not showing any activity then you can give Virgin a kick.

im on a 2mb virgin connection, is this ok

Well you appear to be getting what you are paying for. As long as it is consistent, you should be happy.

this is what i was told by virgin tech support when i was considering going elsewhere for a faster connection.

i'm getting the 2054 kbps and 234 kbps, but i am on a 2mb connection.
apparently, due to the exchange limitations, people in my area can't get anything faster.

Just got 3.9MB at 17.15. Let's have a party! That is only (!) 4.1MB less than the possible maximum and only 2MB below what it was this time last year!!

I don't know why everyone moans about this upto 8 meg issue, go back 2 years, and you would all probably be on upto 512 anyway, and paying more for it. Go back 5 years, and you would all probably be on upto 50kbps, and paying both for the service, and the phone calls. Things are much better and cheaper than they used to be however you look at it. My glass is half full. I have just done a test on upto8, at 17:30, got a download speed of 430Mbps, it doesn't bother me, because websurfing is fine at that speed.

On adsl, the sync rate is related to distance from the exchange, and you will never be able to download at the same speed as the sync rate. On 8meg, you might get downloads of just over 7 meg tops.

My rule of thumb is, if the upload speed on adsl is higher than download speed, there is an isp or BT issue that they may be responsible for.

Im afraid until you post your stats and IP profile and checked your wiring etc. there's nothing to say that it's Virgin's fault and not your own equipment letting you down.
