Double money paid out by Natwest in error!!

Natwest paid a relative of mine their bank charges back it was £2400, this was back in February this year. It turns out she then got another letter with the same offer of bank charges about 1 month later, for the same amount. Unknown to me, she signed this 2nd letter and returned it - turns out that she had double payments from Natwest, so in total she got £4800!!!!
She didnt tell me about this 2nd payment, until now, as it seems she has received a call today from Natwest advising her they have overpaid her.
If I had known, I would have told her at the time not to sign the 2nd letter.
My question now is - as it was the banks error, does she have to pay it back all in one lump sum? I hope she has realised the error of her ways!

yes she does...she should have done that straight away and pointed out the error to the bank...(as being she is an honest person)...its a shame...as people like her ruin it for the rest of us and now the banks will see us all as dishonest...she will have to repay the £2400 in full..

Your being a bit harsh on her arnt you.

The same happened to me, and i assumed that they had made a mistake with the paperwork, or not recieved my acceptance. So i signed and returned it again.

They paid me twice, but realised their mistake, and took it back before i became aware of the error.

But the money is still the banks, and has to be returned. However, if it has been spent, the bank would have little choice but to accept a payment plan.

How is it that when a bank makes and error, people expect us to correct it immediately, and applogise for even thinking about spending it. But when WE make a mistake or the error is in the banks favour, the banks either charge us to the hilt, or take months, even years to put things right? An error by Lloyds TSB on my credit report, has still not been removed 2 YEARS after it was put on, and is only just heading for the courts.

So your friend should not feel guilty about THEIR mess-up - but should be paying them back.
