Can you transfer a number off a contract without cancelling the contract

I have started working abroad and I have until Dec 16 to run with my current mobile phone contract. (Vodafone)
Vodafone are insistent that I cannot transfer my number without paying the early termination fee and point blank refuse to continue the contract with a new number.
If I use a PAC code, they will charge the early termination fee immediately. As I am on a discounted deal, paying the early termination fee is at least double (£100 more) than continuing the contract. Even though VAT is removed, they are charging the undiscounted line rental in the termination fee, rather than the price I pay currently.
My question is, if my number belongs to me rather than Vodafone, this seems to be an unreasonable obstacle/ condition. Surely I should be able to move my number and still retain my contract. Can anyone give me any guidance, I have already raised this via the Vodafone social escalations hub.
Thanks

What they have told you is correct. Porting your number will cancel the contract. So you either need to let it run its term or pay the early termination fee.0

I'm afraid Vodafone are correct on this occasion.
Leave enough money in the account to cover the remaining months and cancel the contract when appropriate.
You have a contract with Vodafone and your choosing to break the contractime.0 -
Since you are moving abroad, why not just let the contract run and see if they can move you to deal with cheaper/free roaming?
The other thing you can do is forward your current number to a UK landline or mobile (even if it is roaming) using the inclusive minutes. Then 30 days before the end of contract get a PAC and use it on day 28.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Just to add, your number doesn't actually belong to you...====0
