What browser are you using? What site(s) do you get most trouble with the ads?
Firefox has addons that you can install to help stop ads, most browsers have pop-up blockers (tho' they're not always 100% efficient).0 -
Edge in the Anniversary update to Windows 10 will come with Adblock, should be released early August0

Just download Adblock Plus, it works for me, although I cannot read the Telegraph any more.0

Or you could install the MVPS Hosts file. Works across all browsers you might have installed, including Edge, and makes separate ad-blockers unnecessary.
Just unzip the downloaded file and run MVPS.bat as administrator. It gets an update every couple of months.0 -

As well as adblock plus extensions such as ghostery block adverts and there is an option to do so in the Opera browser settings.0
