Hi all,

First post, so be gentle!

We just moved to a new house in Hackney Wick, London, and moved our Sky 17mb Broadband with us. The issue is that we get 5-8mb instead of the 13-15mb we got in our previous address. I'm looking at new providers, because Sky won't provide fibre in our area, and the best choices are TalkTalk and PlusNet. We also have BT and SSE as options, but BT are more expensive, and after reading some SSE reviews, I won't consider them.
TalkTalk Large Fibre estimates:
Minimum guaranteed speed of 32Mb
Download Speed: 44Mb to 75Mb
Upload Speed: 15Mb to 20Mb
PlusNet Fibre estimates:
Estimated download speed: 80Mb
Estimated upload speed: 20Mb

This bothers me, because PlusNet don't set any minimum speed, so it can be 80mb, or it can be 20mb.

Any thoughts on these providers in the London area, and in general?

Thanks in advance,
Alvaro

PlusNet is BT , if that's your estimated speed I would expect something close to it

Put your phone number into this

    https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.TelephoneNumberOutput

It ought to give you a pretty accurate idea of what speeds can be achieved.
  • Thanks for the link. Unfortunately doesn't seem to have data specifically for my phone number, but it does for my exact address.

It shows 80-71.8mb / 20mb on VDSL clean and 79.7-48mb / 20-15.9mb on VDSL impacted. Doesn't look too bad!

Any ISP that offers fibre should give you those sort of speeds.

If you are in a new build, then maybe BT Wholesale haven't updated their records yet.

Personally, I'd steer clear of TalkTalk. Plusnet are owned by BT, but tend to be cheaper.

Sky numbers won't show on that checker I don't believe.
