However, it is important to remember that the 'right' credit or debit cards are not available to everybody, so the OP's question is perfectly valid.
There can't be too many people taking foreign holidays who don't have some kind of bank debit card, with which they can top up a travel prepaid card such as Revolut or FairFX as and when needed.

We went to Protaras a few months ago. Not many decent sized supermarkets at that end of Cyprus. We found the Lidl was very limiting in terms of product range and other than that, the only others are the small convenience supermarkets which are very expensive. We did eventually find a bigger supermarket (Metro) that locals/residents use about 5 minutes away by car just in Paralimni which was a lot better and had lots of British brands as well as far superior butchery/bakery.

I have a Post Office credit card which I think is easily available?? I keep it for foreign travel.

I used to have a Nationwide account with a 'free' debit card but gave up when they changed the rules and insisted on a part of monthly income being paid in. I've made different choices with my current accounts.

Now, I start with a small amount of cash (to change or in currency) that I use just for coffees or markets or parking and any bill of any size (supermarket, restaurant, fuel...) I use my credit card. That's exactly how I'd operate at home. Generally we come home with currency and it gets put away for the next trip.

I do take my (incurs charges) debit card with me but that's for emergencies. I haven't had any yet but would willingly take the hit in a difficult situation.
