Previously we would edge the children into camping by attending a Haven Campsite.

    Breakfast - Cereal
    Lunch - Chippy
    Dinner - Meal out

We would have access to the evening venue, and the activities...

    Negatives -

"Dad i can see the sun" at 4am...
"Mum, i cant sleep, them people next door are talking"

    Happy memories....

We visited a campsite last year which was £16 a night for all 4 of us. It had a windmill with a bakery inside, the kids could bake bread for £2 each! It had a petting farm and a little barn conversion games room. Fantastic little place! It was about 10 miles from Wells-next-the-sea so we got a seaside visit in too.

It was called Bircham Windmill. Highly recommend coolcamping.com for looking for campsites

Pitch fee £18.50 (2 adults) + 2 kids £6 + EHU £2.50. So since last year, it would now cost you £27pn.

thats an increase of over £10 in a year. Which just reaffirms the point of this thread

Wow that is a big increase since last year, especially if you plan to go for a few nights!

As a couple with no kids we did a lot of camping around the UK several years ago. We have camped a bit here and there more recently, but only for a few nights at most.

The key advantage of camping for us was the ability to make own food, as the cost of eating out soon adds up to significant amounts. The disadvantage is the amount of stuff needed to put into the car and the somewhat random element of camping resulting in whether it is pleasant or not - primarily depending on other campers, how considerate they are and the weather.

With the rise of AirBNB (and similar) to find places with cooking facilities, as well as more competitive hotel rates, it is difficult to justify the cost of camping compared to what we get.

On our next trip away, a hotel room will cost us £24.50 covering both of us with free parking. Our last few trips have been in AirBNB places costing maybe £30-£40 per night including breakfast for both of us, the price depending on how popular the location was. Meanwhile, it has become rare to find anywhere below £20 per night for camping now.

If we camp at all, I am really looking for something unique in a site - great views, beaches, or whatever. Otherwise there isn't any value in camping compared to the alternatives.
  • I love camping, in my 2 man tunnel tent. My fave campsite is the National Trust one at Lake Consiton. In 2016 it cost £6 a night, this year it had gone up to £8 a night (if I remember correctly).
It's a small & very basic site, so quiet with not many kids about. I try to go at least once a year. Small, large & medium tents have different prices but I do think they charge per person. It's online booking, so never gets over full.

This summer I also went to one at the foot of Snowden, about 5 miles from Beddgelert. It wasn't to my liking, too busy/crowded & stunk of campfire smoke every night. Although the scenery was stunning. It was £45 for 5 nights.

Wow! £45 for 5 nights ! And the name of this site please?
  • Since they started charging £180 per night to kip in a Yert. Camping is now a rich mans game ever since the well-to-do's decided they want to 'be at' one' with nature, !!!!!! in a compost heap and 'reduce their carbon footprint'. They are quite happy to pay £47381743824732 per second to ease their heavy conscious and THAT is why camping now an expensive stay

That one. It's £10 a night but you get it for £9 a night if you stay for 5 nights.
It's in a lovely place, quite isolated tho (take lots of food as there's nowhere nearby to shop cheaply) & I went in August, so it was busy with school holidays.
It might be a bit quieter in term time. There's also some kayaks to hire for going onto the lake. It's great for families, but I prefer quieter, smaller campsites.

I went with 3 adult friends (3tents) & we each payed £45, so cheap for one person but adds up for a family.
