Is it possible to buy an HDMI TV firestick that doesn't need a subscription just to pick up more 'conventional' channels like BBC, ITV, 4 etc?

The Amazon Fire Stick does not require a subscription.
The free application TVPlayer (search for TVPLAYER on Amazon) has the freeview "lite" channels with a subscription required for the full freeview channels.
Watch live TV from many of the UK’s most popular channels:
- Entertainment: BBC One, BBC Two, ITV 1, Channel 4, FIVE, Dave**, Really**, Yesterday**, Drama**, BBC Four, 4Music, Food Network, Travel Channel and Home**
- Music: Kiss, Kerrang!, The BOX, Smashhits, Magic, Heat, Capital, Heart, NOW, Planet Pop, Clubland and Channel AKA
- Kids: CBBC and CBeebies
- Lifestyle: Fashion TV, QVC, QVC Style, QVC Beauty and QVC Extra
- News: BBC News, Russia Today, Al Jazeera and Euro News
- Desi: Sony SAB, Colors and Rishtey, Zing and aaj tak
- Religious: Revelation TV and UCBTV
**Channels are only available on Kindle devices and not on FireTV or Fire Stick (GOLD, Watch, Eden, Home, Dave, Yesterday, Really, Drama).:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Don't forget if you are watching live TV you need a TV license.0

Another vote for TV player. You can also get Freeview on demand apps: BBC Iplayer, ITV Hub, 4OD, Demand 5 and UKTV Player. For £4.99 you get some subscription channels not on freeview.Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0

Bought it now, and it's not too bad. What lets it down is the rubbish broadband speed we have to put up with. Occasionally the circle goes round and round and round and round... ad infinitum.0

Is there no way to improve your broadband speed? Why aren't you able to use a conventional TV aerial for the channels you want to view?0 -

Is there no way to improve your broadband speed? Why aren't you able to use a conventional TV aerial for the channels you want to view? Because the television is on the blind side to the transmitter and it would be downright ugly and more expensive to do it any other way.0
