Thoughts on a new phone
My Samsung S4 Mini has completely died. It is 6 weeks short of the end of the contract so not the end of the world.
I am looking for a replacement. I no longer trust Samsung as OHs S2 died 1 month after contract finished and Samsung are rubbish at updating Android.
Ideally I am looking for a phone that won't die at the 2 year mark and will receive regular Android updates. I am thinking of a Nexus 5X, buying outright and getting a SIM only deal. The main downside is it seems to be a bit on the big size.
So can anyone give me any info on the Nexus 5X or suggest a decent alternative. I am looking at around the £200 mark for buying a phone or in the region of £15 per month if going for a contract (preferably EE for coverage).

My S2 is still going strong so not all samsungs are bad.
I think most manufacturers stop updating their phones after 2 years. if this bothers you root it and put a custom Rom(XDA forum will guide you on this)on as the more popular phones get longer support.
5x is a good phone but it depends on your usage patterns, for me battery life is a main concern.0 -

The OnePlus X is a good phone for the money (£189). It runs on 5.1 (It won't get Android N, but should be getting Android Marshmallow soon.)
But if you are looking for regular updates to Android, a Nexus device would be your best bet.0 -

Same here my S2 is still working well, my daughters has a weak battery. Must be the way she uses/charges it as mine is older and lasts longer.
My S4 is well out of contract also and no issues, other than getting one of the early ones with swelling battery issues.

Motorola will get updates fast, as in the Moto G as mentioned.
A few lads in work have been getting the Samsung A5 2016 or the S5 Neo, but at £300 + seems a lot to me.
I've just ordered the new Honor 5C as a replacement for my 2 year old Moto G. Same or better specs as the above 2 Samsungs mentioned but for £150.

It sounds like others have had better experiences with Samsung devices than me. 1 tablet, 3 phones (OH has S4 mini too), 2 TVs and 2 Blu-ray players and very few updates and some broken promises. At least the freezer works well.
I went for the Nexus 5X. Google have already published update details and it seems they often exceed their minimum guarantees. It should also play nicely with screen mirroring, something the Samsungs have struggled with. Also it is slightly smaller than the other phones mentioned and for me smaller is better as long as functionality is good.
Many thanks for all the comments and advice. After years of disappointment with get-rich-quick schemes, I know I'm gonna get rich with this scheme...and quick! - Homer Simpson0 -
Nexus 5x, a very good choice but you said your budget was £200
Did you get one for that money?0 -
I'm not a fan of Samsung phones either, am staying clear of them.0
