What kind of school encourages this? DS's school not only wouldn't allow such footwear but they are not even allowed black trainers, only proper school/work shoes and that's the local comprehensive school.

Regardless of health, it's about learning to dress appropriately in the context of the situation. Aren't schools also supposed to prepare children to the adult working world they will face when they leave?

I think the doubt comes from the fact that you only need to google the name to find out where you can buy them!

Thing is, articles on how feet never used to have arch support don't compare like with like. Wearing shoes which keep your feet flat are not the same as going barefoot, walking on not flat roads which allow your foot to bend AND gain strength, is just not a real comparison to make, there are too many differences.

If you want to read more about how barefoot footwear is a new growing trend (and there is a lot written about it out there) read up on how the footwear for barefoot training are very thin so your feet can feel the ground and not stamp down so hard, how the barefoot footwear is far more flexible so feet can react to the ground and bend and flex without being hemmed down to being flat, and how they all have deliberately wide toe boxes because toes are needed for balance and diffusing any impact when walking (or running) and how walking on pavements and roads are very different to walking on rocky mountains, sandy beaches and wide fields of plant life.

But unless the OP is wearing very thin soles, very flexible soles and is doing his walking over hills and rocky roads and through grassy patches, I doubt the plimsoles are going to offer much in the way of supporting healthy foot growth.

But I guess that's what physios are great for...

I do actually know a fair bit about this - and the worst foot damage is done by poorly fitting, constraining shoes. And very sadly a huge proportion of shoes are poorly fitting as they simply don't come in as much variation as feet, and most people loose patience hunting through for the few that fit. Better to have no support than the wrong support. The idea of simply buying shoes in the right size and wearing them is completely alien, and painful, to me.

But as you say - physios are great, and sadly a huge number of people never do learn to walk and move properly, and physios can help with this.

Perhaps not so much a troll as someone boosting their post count before spamming.

Thank you for the laugh. I can't think of any item of clothing I would want seven years practice to wear.
