In this instance, no matter that school is unfussed, as a mother I'd be putting my foot down & buying 'real' shoes that lace up, that support the growing foot and that with a bit of polish will last a bit longer than a few months. Trainers & plimsolls in Autumn & winter? Foolishness.

Asda have real leather shoes for under £20 (my sons wear them) and they look smart enough as well as protecting the growing foot. I appreciate £20 (or more) for unpredictably growing feet is a hazard to the budget, but you do not get a second chance with feet.

As for son, tell him that proper shoes mean healthy feet, regardless of what his mates are wearing or what school says 'will do', and that is why you refuse to buy extra plimsolls & trainers.

Omg , how things have changed

In my day you were highly ashamed to be sent to school in plimsolls, it meant your parents couldn't afford shoes

    You are right.

I also remember that even twice a week for PE 'pumps' became rather smelly.

They may well be " fashion " but still they are not suitable as school shoes

Soaking wet feet in the rain, dye on the socks, no support on the arches, no protection from broken glass, nothing to absorb shock

Do your child a favour and tell him him fashion is for the weekend and buy him decent school shoes that will last more then a week

When it's raining I will tell him to wear his black trainers to school and if he wants to wear his plimsolls he will have to take them in his bag and change into them when he gets to school
  • My sons ankles and arches would be toast if he worse plimsolls everyday. It sounds like a terrible idea.

We get trainer-like black shoes from a Sketchers outlet shop, costing about £20. Great foot support.

You could give your child long term damage to their feet if you sent them in plimsolls.

Are those in fashion not the colourful or flowery ones favoured by girls ?

If black are fashionable then the OP would have no problem with finding some to buy.

If you don't win this battle, for his own good, there will be more in store when he really gets into his stroppy teens.

Or you could say not a bloody mission and get him proper shoes for school

I get my grandsons school shoes from Tk maxx. Every time I'm in there I go look and if there's decent shoes , even if a size too big, I get them

Kickers I got for £7 a pair. I got four pairs all different sizes and he's grown into them. Last pair I got were sketchers, £5, size 3, he's just into size 2 ATM so these will do come Christmas

He keep plimsolls for PE and trainers for playing or going out.
