American Express - black file reset

Anyone know the expiration period for a prior cardholder on the Amex blacklist?

I had an account about 7 years and entered into a debt management plan to pay it off. About 3 years ago, I received an offer through the post to settle for 50%. I took it.

About 6 months I applied again, and was told they wouldn't consider the app due to my prior violation of T&Cs.

Fair play, but the same happened with 2 other cards I had with Barclaycard, and a year later I was re-accepted. I've got a pretty decent limit and a Platinum card, no worries.

I'd like an Amex for business use but don't know how long to give it until my next app?

Never. Amex don't lend again to anyone who has defaulted on them in the past, as I understand it.

    Nice one.

Do you know if this is a worldwide ban?

In all honesty with American Express you're in for a long wait, I know a guy that still can't get a card and it's been 10 years since he went bankrupt with AMEX being one of those he owed.

You can, allegedly, get around it by being an authorised user on another persons account, in the US it's rumoured to be one of the ways off the black list but I can't say for certain whether it applies in the UK too.

And also, does this apply to all Amex branded cards, or just Amex direct?

As in - if I applied for the Virgin airmiles reward card, any idea if that would be checked against the internal Amex file?

That is with MBNA not AMEX, it's up to MBNA in that instance. AMEX direct is where you have the blacklist not MBNA or Lloyds Avios for example.

Good info, thanks. My gf has an Amex. I've avoided adding myself as a 2nd cardholder because I didn't want to create a financial association until the past mess was behind me. Thankfully the default has now expired.

Awesome, I'll give it a try.

    Cheers.

I don't agree that a blacklist exists for any bank or lender which is probably against the provisions of the data protection act. I would say it's as long as they keep records which may be a minimum of 5 years. Any record they hold about you may be renewed or extended due to a new application.

It's not against the DPA as they have a demonstrable need to keep the data, in order to run their business.
