How to install a basin waste

Hi ya I thought I would watch a few vid's on How to install a basin waste
Some say use plumbers mate or plumbers gold and not silicone
why cant I use silicone to install the sink waste?
I will be doing the exactly same as this guy but stuck now on whether to get one of the above mate or gold and not my silicone
Advice please

Because silicone doesn't last for ever, is difficult to remove, and the fittings can't be tightened once it's set, if it leaks.

Plumbers Mait is what I always use. Never had a problem with it.

Ideally you'd use neither, but I would opt for Plumber's Mait for the reasons jk0 gave.

Honestly, if you ever have to take it apart, your future self will hate you.

You shouldn't need anything underneath. As with all fittings the point is to seal the outlet from the appliance. Which you do from the inside. If you need something underneath, it is because the seal inside the sink/bath has not been made watertight. I'm not saying don't put anything on the underside if you want to. But the time would be better spent ensuring that the waste was sealed properly on the side where the water is sitting.
It is like in a boat hull, the seal on a through-hull fitting, needs to be on the side that faces the water. Not on the inside. If the water has got through to the inside of the hull. It is because the hull fitting has not been sealed properly on the outside.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

If your basin has an overflow, then there are two bits you need to seal. (The bottom of the basin, and the bit where the overflow joins the waste.) I use Plumbers Mait for both. I have been known to use it instead of those foam seals also, but that may be wrong.

Always just seal the bottom with a premium silicone such as Dow 785

    Project fear over with; )
I sealed the metal waste with just the rubber seals on thier own.
the thicker of the two that came with the waste for the top and the big cone shaped one i purchased separately for the bottom and after 30 minutes oftesting no leaks
    Touch wood.
    Thanks again everyone
