Hi,
I'm looking for a property in south east London. Since I'm not a native, how do I know the property is in a relatively good area?
Thanks,
Derek

Visit as many neighbourhoods as possible. I think I must have trekked around 90% of SE London when I looked for a flat.
Or, post on here where you're thinking of buying, and Doozergirl will possible give you a run down!Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. - Jefferson0 -

There's no substitute for simply visiting the area and exploring it. Draw up a shortlist of the amenities and local services that are important to you and research the area online to see if the area offers them. Check www.tfl.gov.uk to see how well connected it is for transport links, http://www.welovelocal.com/ and www.trustedplaces.com for area advice, and www.fancyapint.com. Walk around the area at various times of the day and evening to see how comfortable you feel there; London boroughs can differ wildly and while I feel at home in my part of London, you may have different needs.2015 comp wins - £370.25

Thanks to everyone who posts freebies and comps! :j0 -
I'd be pretty wary in SE London. You're looking for a diamond in a cow field. You may find it but you're much more likely to end up in the !!!!!!.0

Crystal Palace?
My advice is to avoid West Norwood - I saw a car riddled with bullet holes when I stopped by to view some flats there one day!
I like Battersea, Tooting and Earlsfield...Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. - Jefferson0 -

Think you could say that for almost every area in the UK.
Do your research, visit at different times of the day and week. Pop into the local Police station and ask the desk officer their opinion and crime stats. As mentioned already check out local services that are relevant for you. Plus if you are planning a long term stay, are children involved, what are the school rankings, etc.
Post on here where in SE London you are looking at, as it covers a large area. I'm sure there will be MSEs from all over from SE1 to SE28.Financial Aims for 2012:

They very much fall under South WEST London postcodes Melissa!
And even Tooting carries a higher price tag than virtually all of SE London.
West Norwood is hell, pretty much. Some nice roads on the Streatham side.
I forgot Dulwich. I suspect the village is out of most people's price ranges but sometimes you can get something fairly reasonably priced in East or West Dulwich.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
