Why is the everyone focussed on our trade with Europe after Brexit?

All I seem to hear on the radio and tv at the moment is about us having access to European markets. If it is the case that we import more than we export with Europe then surely we would apply the same import tax that they do and the problem would effect Europe more than us? So once the dust settles wont it be in everyone's interest to maintain trade?

I dont usually follow politics and economics so I am probably missing something obvious.

A lot of the trade we do with the EU, is because of the EU. Just how much the former is affected by the latter is about to become painfully clear over the next few years.

It would be but its also about the EU saving face - one of its biggest member states leaving and life gets rosier for them immediately? They'll make sure nothing is easy for us at all, despite it being in their best interests.

The way I see it, is if we get through this the EU in its current form collapses completely.

I don't pretend to be an expert in international trade but as I see it we currently have an agreement whereby all trade within the EU is covered by one free trade agreement. In the future we may be able to replace this agreement with another to cover everything but that is likely to mean free movement of people and us continuing to pay into the EU. Those are the two main things that the 52% don't want.

If we don't have an agreement then tariffs are very likely to be introduced which would hurt everyone.

Whilst we may import more than we export, the rest of the EU is far bigger than the UK by numbers.
for this reason, any inability to trade will hurt us more because the EU can spread the "hit" over 27 countries.
As mentioned previously, the EU has a vested interest in seeing us fail. This will probably "trump" the fact that it is in both our interests to trade together.

    Worrying times me thinks!!!

i don't think M/s Merkel would like it if we decided to tell her to stuff her cars where the son does not shine.

Trading with those countries is all good and well. What might we be selling to the likes of Ghana & Bangladesh?

Yes I think we should be talking trade agreements with these & others.
We should (& hopefully are) be doing this now, not when we've issued this article 50 notice.
