If I lived in Boston [Lincs] then frankly I'd have been very tempted to vote out, in fact I probably would have done. Immigration from EE has led to some pretty astonishing changes there, most of them arguably bad, in a very short space of time. What good things has this kind of internationalism brought to Boston? Not all that many [other than the general across the board stuff like the government being able to afford to feed, clothe, educate, care for, etc its population], truth be told.
But Sunderland, with almost zero immigrants & its colossal car-exporting factories, give me effing strength...
3.6% of of the population not born in the UK. I think somewhere soon is going to be aquiring a nickname, not unlike, (in its mockery), those from down the coast. Hartlepool 'The Monkeyhangers''Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
Sunderland typifies a new political conundrum.
How do you win back large chunks of the country when your political elite are so heavily focussed on the south?
You can call these Northern voters idiots if you wish, but I'm not convinced that insulting works as a campaigning mechanism.
In the past, Labour would bribe the poorer areas, with a viable benefit lifestyle and various makeweight back-to-work schemes (which generally delivered depressingly low results).
So what would Labour do now the slush money isn't there?
Corbyn is still completely unaware of the problems his party faces in the traditional heartlands. He is a dead man walking IMO.0 -

You voted Leave and that's super dooper awesome, really lovely and I think you're brilliant for that. I can't agree with your democratic decision more. Heck yeah!!!!!
What comes next though? What's the plan?
PS - You're much politer as a womanSorry for your health issues.

A rebalancing of our economy away from services and towards manufacturing wouldn't be a bad thing.
Great idea - after all we have low energy costs and low labour costs - prerequisites for competitive manufacturing in a global economy. Our edge in competitiveness here will overcome any tarriff premiums we may face vs our EU competitors
If I had billions to invest in manufacturing the UK would be top of my list of places to invest. definitelyLeft is never right but I always am.0 -
Of course there's no plan. [STRIKE]No-one controls the markets.
The people voted largely irrespective of what the politicians said.
We are leaving because the people wanted out.
We will have to deal with it.

Mr Osborne may have to scrap his "Living wage" though.
Labour isn't the only thing that matters. Germany still has a large manufacturing base. Half of the equipment in my house (and parked outside it) is made in Germany. Even LIDL sells cheap crap made in Germany when others sell cheap crap made in China.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
If the GBP keeps nose diving then UK labour will be cheap.
